The arrows indicate «max» (1) And «min» (2) marks on the compensation tank with coolant. For additional control from below, a control probe is allowed (3) coolant level, which signals on the instrument panel using a warning lamp or the Auto-Check system about a very low coolant level.
With a frost resistance tester (arrow) check the concentration of antifreeze.
If the expansion tank screw cap has to be opened when the engine is hot, there is a high risk of burns - so proceed with caution.
With a gloved hand or with a cloth, slowly open» cap one turn and allow the excess pressure to escape from the system. Only then completely unscrew the cover.
If you add only distilled water, then gradually you will dilute the coolant, so if possible, you should immediately add a little concentrated antifreeze - antifreeze.
Do not top up above the mark «max» (see previous section); The coolant expands as it heats up and the excess evaporates from the system.
You can add a small amount of liquid to the expansion tank both when the engine is cold and when the engine is warm.
With a significant loss of fluid and a hot engine, do not add cold water to the expansion tank. Because of «cold shock» the cylinder head may be deformed or the cylinder block cracked.
Coolant
It is not pure water that circulates in the cooling system, but a mixture of antifreeze, which includes additives that prevent freezing and corrosion, and distilled water. Therefore, it is better to talk about coolant or coolant. The mixing ratio is 2:3 for European conditions, 1:1 for Nordic countries.
Just as important as frost protection is corrosion protection. It prevents the formation of scale, rust and other corrosion products in the cooling system. Therefore, the anti-corrosion coolant poured in the workshop does not need to be drained in the spring, but should be left in the cooling system all year round.
Audi workshops use their own frost protection «G 11 V8 V». The manufacturer also allows the use of other brands bearing the designation «according to TL VW774 B».
