The order of operation of the window lifters in the Audi-100 is determined not only by the switches, but also by the window lifter control unit, located in an additional relay block on the left in the driver's footwell.
When the engine is running, the driver's door glass moves up or down until it stops after a short press on the switch. However, you can stop the glass by briefly pressing the switch in the upward direction.
But this comfort shift function is only available in cars produced since October 92, only for downshifting for safety reasons.
When the engine is not running, the driver's door window moves only when the window switch is pressed. And it does not matter whether the window is going up or down, or the door is open or closed.
Only when the switch is pressed do the other windows in the car move. You can lock the rear door windows from the central switch in the driver's door armrest.
If the driver's door is opened and closed again with the engine off, the power window system is disabled (anti-theft protection).
Malfunctions
Electric window lift motors are removed in the same way as mechanical lifts, see the description in the chapter "Body elements". Electric motor repair is not provided.
If none of the windows move, you need to check the fuse at the bottom in the additional relay box at the rear left in the engine compartment (chapter "Body electrical system"). Since we are talking about an automatic fuse, the power supply should be restored after a short time.
If only one window lifter does not work, you need to remove the corresponding switch and check it according to the diagram described in this chapter.
If the switch is working properly, you need to remove the trim of the corresponding door.
Disconnect the window lift motor wire ends and check with a test lamp whether voltage is supplied when the window lift is turned on.
If no defect has been detected so far, then the window lift motor is faulty.
If there is no power supply to the electric motor, check the wiring and control unit.
Poor movement of one of the glasses may be caused by jamming in the guide.
Even if your car's window lifts fail, this is still not a reason to drive in the wind and storm with the windows open.
Troubleshooting on the road
If the switch is faulty, try closing the window from a different switch.
If this is not possible (for example, if the driver's door is affected), remove the plug from the other glass or transfer the wires to another, working switch.
With this working switch you can close the glass.
If the wire to the electric motor is broken, disconnect the plug, run an auxiliary wire from the "+" terminal of the battery and a second wire from the "ground" to the electric motor and raise the window.
If the window lift motor is faulty, you can remove the glass from the window lift with the door trim removed. To do this, you need to press the safety locking ring on the back of the window lift that secures the glass to the window lift (use a mirror for this). Now slide the glass up and secure it in this position with adhesive tape or a wooden wedge.
