Table of contents: Replacing fuses ↓ Additional fuses ↓
Each electrical device in the car requires a certain set amount of current. The cross-section of the wire leading to the device is determined accordingly to this current. If the current in this electrical circuit increases, for example, due to the appearance of additional consumers or due to a short circuit, then this wire is overloaded. In this case, it can heat up slightly or even start to glow if the current supply is not interrupted in time. This is exactly what fuses do. As already noted, in order to prevent the Audi from being completely without power in the event of a defect in the electrical circuit, fuses are distributed in various electrical circuits. However, the connections between the battery, generator, starter and ignition switch are not protected by fuses.
Replacing fuses
If you need to replace one of the fuses, you can use the small plastic pliers attached to the cover of the central distribution unit to disconnect it (on the left front side of the instrument panel).
If the new fuse immediately blows again, you should check whether the fuse installed was too weak (see fuse table).
If the fuse has been selected correctly, you should identify the connected current consumers based on the fuse table and check each of them separately. The corresponding electrical circuit will also help in this case (see next chapter).
In case of doubt, all consumers should be disconnected and connected one by one. The consumer, when connected, the fuse burns out, is faulty.
Additional fuses
On certain versions with additional equipment, additional fuses are located in the additional relay block I on the left rear in the engine compartment. In this case, we are often talking about so-called thermal fuses. These are fuses that, after an overload of the electrical circuit, interrupt the current in it for a certain time and then restore the connection again.
The illustration shows the fuse box (3) on the left front of the instrument panel. The fuse box cover has a short description of the fuse locations (2). Also, the small plastic pliers (1) located there are used to remove the fuses.
The small numbers in the illustration indicate the fuse numbers they are labeled with in the fuse table below.
The fuses for the ignition and injection systems are located in the ignition system block under the floor in the area of the feet of the passenger sitting in the front seat next to the driver.
