Make sure that the automatic transmission is in a strictly horizontal position.
Loosen the lock nut and adjusting bolt.
Apply sealant to the bolt and tighten it to a torque of 1.0 kgf·m
Unscrew the bolt again and tighten it to a torque of 0.5 kgf·m
Loosen the adjusting bolt exactly 2½ turns and tighten the lock nut.
Since August 1988, the automatic transmission control mechanism has been changed. The new device does not allow the engine to start if the selector lever is not in the "N" — neutral or "P" — parking position.
For added safety, the selector lever is locked in the "P" position by an additional locking device that releases the selector lever only after the brake pedal is pressed.
