Withdrawal
Loosen the fastening bolts of the regenerator, the power steering pump and, depending on the configuration, the fastening bolts of the power steering pump.
Remove the alternator drive belt and, depending on the configuration, the drive belts for the power steering pump and power brake pump.
Remove the crankshaft pulley.
Remove the front camshaft drive belt guards.
Disconnect the high voltage wire harness and remove the spark plugs.
Turn the crankshaft to the TDC position on the compression stroke of the 1st cylinder, aligning the mark on the flywheel with the alignment lug on the clutch housing and setting the mark on the camshaft sprocket to the level of the cylinder head gasket.
Labels for adjusting gas distribution: Above: TDC mark on the compression stroke of the 1st cylinder on the camshaft pulley; below: TDC mark of the piston of the 1st cylinder on the crankshaft pulley
Slightly loosen the coolant pump mounting bolts, turn the pump housing counterclockwise to loosen the toothed belt tension.
Remove the camshaft drive belt.
Installation
Note. Do not rotate the camshaft when one of the pistons is at TDC.
Install or check the correct position of the camshaft pulley, corresponding to the TDC of the compression stroke of the piston of the 1st cylinder, the mark on the pulley should be opposite the upper plane of the camshaft cover gasket.
Make sure that the crankshaft occupies the position corresponding to the TDC of the compression stroke of the piston of the 1st cylinder; while the marks on the flywheel and on the clutch cover must match. When adjusting the timing mechanism on a removed engine, align the marks on the crankshaft pulley and the upper edge of the oil pump housing.
Slide the camshaft drive belt onto the pulleys.
Tighten the belt over the pulley teeth.
Tension the toothed belt by moving the water pump housing.
Turn the crankshaft two turns and check the position of the alignment marks.
Install the drive camshaft belt guards.
Install the alternator drive belt and, depending on the configuration, the drive belts for the power steering pump and the power brake pump and adjust their tension.
Install the spark plugs and high voltage wire bundle.
Check and. if necessary, adjust the ignition timing.
