The ignition system is contactless, including a distributor sensor with a built-in electronic control pulse sensor, a high-energy ignition coil and a switch. The engine of the "NP" model has the same ignition system as the engine of the "DS" model.

Ignition distributor sensor

Bosch brand ignition distributor sensor, shielded, four-spark, with vacuum and centrifugal ignition timing regulators, with high-voltage current distributor with axial terminals, with built-in microelectronic sensor (generator) control pulses with a change in the phase angle of the resulting voltage. It is driven by a helical gear of the intermediate shaft. The direction of rotation is left (from the camshaft drive side). The voltage value generated by the generator sensor is within the range of 0-2 V. Resistance of the distributor rotor (marked "R1"), Ohm: 1000.

Ignition distributor sensor numbers according to the Bosch catalogue:
  • engine "DR": 0 237 020 052; 0 237 020 084 or 0 237 020 104;
  • engine "DS": 0 237 020 086 or 0 237 020 118.

Ignition advance angle to TDC with the vacuum advance regulator hose connected at idle speed: 18°±1°.

Note: When using unethylated gasoline with an octane rating of 95, it is recommended to reduce the initial ignition advance angle before TDC to 10°±1°.

Switch

The switch converts the control pulses of the generator sensor into current pulses in the primary winding of the ignition coil. It is installed in the car's interior, under the left lower trim next to the engine hood lock drive handle and has a seven-plug connector (plug No.7 is a backup). 1.5 seconds after the ignition distributor sensor shaft stops, a special switch circuit smoothly breaks the ignition coil power supply circuit, preventing sparking. This prevents excessive heating of the ignition coil with a low resistance value of the primary winding.

Switch brand and manufacturer's catalog number: Tele-Iunken 211 905 351 D; Bosch 0 227 100 104 or 0 227 100 138.

Ignition coil

Brand and catalog number: Bosch 0 221 122 022 or 0 221 122 350. Primary winding resistance at 20°C, Ohm: 0.52-0.76.

Resistance of secondary winding at 20°C, kOhm: 2.4-3.5.

Spark plugs

Spark plugs

* Recommended for use in vehicles, especially those that make frequent short trips.

Gap between electrodes, mm:
  • engine "DR": 0.6-0.8;
  • engines "DS", "NP": 0,8-0,9.

Since September 1985, cars with the DS engine have been equipped with spark plugs with an extended service life, which are replaced after 30,000 km, and not after 15,000 km, as before.

Brand and type of spark plugs: Bosch W6DO; Weight 14-6 DU: Champion N79V. Gap between electrodes, mm: 0.8±1.0.

High voltage wires

High voltage wires are equipped with interference suppressing tips.

Resistance of high voltage wires, kOhm:
  • central wire: 22.0±0.8;
  • other wires: 6.0±1.4.

Resistance of noise suppression tips, kOhm:
  • from the spark plug side: 1.0±0.4;
  • from the ignition distributor sensor side: 5.0±1.0.
