Automatic transmission — removal and installation (Audi 100 C3)

1. Place the car on an inspection pit or on car ramps or axle stands. Apply the handbrake, block the wheels.

2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

3. Drain the cooling system as described in Section 2.

4. Disconnect the two coolant hoses from the transmission fluid cooler.

5. Disconnect the speedometer drive cable at the end of the transmission.

6. Support the front of the engine using a winch or support beam (Fig. 7.2).

7. Remove the starter as described in Section 4A.

8. Through the starter hole, remove the bolts securing the transformer to the drive plate. You will need to rotate the crankshaft to access each bolt in the starter hole.

9. Referring to Section 8, disconnect the inner CV joints of the drive shafts from the transmission drive flanges.

10. Remove the selector lever cable retainer from the rear of the transmission. Remove the retaining ring, disconnect the selector lever cable from the transmission lever.

11. On 087 transmission, remove the accelerator rod pusher.

12. Disconnect the accelerator pedal cable.

13. Place a container under the transmission, unscrew the connecting nut of the dipstick tube in the oil pan. Remove the tube from the pan, let the liquid drain into the container.



14. Loosen and remove the upper engine-to-transmission mounting bolts.

15. On 089 transmission, unscrew the throttle cable holder hanger bolts, release the end of the cable from the locking bracket, separate the cable and hanger from the transmission.

16. Support the transmission with a jack.

17. Loosen and remove the lower engine-to-transmission mounting bolts.

18. Remove the transmission mounting bolts, then remove the holders.

19. Disconnect the transmission from the engine, the transformer should remain on the transmission grooves.

20. Lower the transmission and remove it from under the vehicle.

21. Installation is carried out in reverse order, please pay attention to the following points:
  • a) Check that the transformer is positioned correctly.
  • b) Connect the drive shafts and install the starter.
  • c) Fill the cooling system as described in Section 2
  • d) After installation, adjust the accelerator, throttle, selector lever and cables as described in Chapters 6 and 7, and fill the transmission as described in Chapter 3.
