1 Front exhaust pipe ("trousers")
2 Pre-muffler or catalytic converter (on engines with less power without a catalyst in this place there is just a piece of pipe)
3 Main muffler
4 Additional muffler
Four- and five-cylinder engines have an exhaust system of a similar design. Parts listing:
- The exhaust manifold is mounted on the cylinder head.
- It is continued by the front exhaust pipe, which. depending on the modification, it is made in the form of a single or double pipe.
- Next comes the catalyst with a short piece of pipe. On vehicles without a catalytic converter, there is a small pre-silencer or a straight pipe.
- The middle and end mufflers are connected to each other by a short piece of pipe. For repairs, these parts are sold separately. On some models, the pipe section in front of the middle muffler has a narrowing.
Service life of the exhaust tract
The rate of corrosion from exhaust gases decreases as the temperature of the exhaust gases decreases. From this point of view, short distance trips with stops and engine cooling are less harmful than long trips with a warm engine and constantly hot exhaust gases. However, during cooling, condensate forms in the mufflers, which, mixing with combustion products, forms aggressive acids that corrode the metal of the exhaust stroke from the inside.
Regardless of the driving mode, moisture entering from the outside causes rust. Stone hits or bumps will also shorten the life of the exhaust tract, and with them the vibration caused by defective suspension rubbers or poor engine suspension.
