The exhaust system is rigidly connected to the exhaust manifold and, via a holder, to the gearbox. It is freely suspended on rubber loops on the bottom of the car.
Check the retaining rubber bands for breaks, cracks and other damage; replace if necessary.
Check the threaded fasteners on the exhaust manifold and on the bracket on the gearbox for tightness, but do not pull them with force.
With the engine running, plug the exhaust pipe outlet with a rag. The engine should stall after a short time.
If you hear a hissing sound and the engine continues to run, you need to look for a leak in the area where the noise is occurring.
A dull exhaust note and popping sounds when coasting usually indicate that the exhaust stroke is rusty.
The mufflers are initially damaged by rust at the seams. If they need to be left for some time, a detonation test must be performed at this location using a screwdriver.
