Repairing a rusted exhaust system only gives temporary results. Rusted sheet metal cannot be welded, putty and bandages help for a while, the tin in the repair area soon collapses again.

It is very rare that two or all three mufflers need to be replaced at the same time, but, as luck would have it, the next one breaks down after a few months. Therefore, the entire exhaust system is often replaced. We do not insist on doing this, since the individual parts of the exhaust system of an Audi are simply screwed together and not inserted into each other. Removing a separate part of the pipe can be done without any particular difficulties.

Tap the faulty muffler with a hammer around the circumference, as well as from the ends. Do not hit it too hard.

If a clear sound is heard with each blow, it means that the tin has already become thinner and will soon collapse, especially if it is winter and the road is sprinkled with salt.

When purchasing spare parts, you also need to purchase a gasket(s) and self-locking nuts.

Removal the exhaust tract

Here are only general instructions for removing the exhaust system. The position of the fasteners and suspension parts are shown in the figure. The exhaust system parts are quite easy to separate from each other.

1 Connecting the main muffler to the additional one

1 Connecting the main muffler to the additional one
2 Connecting the pre-silencer to the main silencer
3 Connecting the front exhaust pipe to the pre-silencer or catalytic converter

Support the vehicle and secure it securely.

If the threaded connection does not give in during dismantling, do not rotate the bolt together with the nut in a circle, but try to tear off the bolt (in this case it breaks off). The exception is the threaded connections on the engine exhaust manifold.

The nuts on the exhaust manifold studs can, in extreme cases, be knocked off with a chisel. They are usually made of very soft metal with a spiral embedded in them. The threaded part can then be removed from the studs separately. The new nuts from the exhaust tract repair kit are made of the same soft metal. No other nuts can be used.

Before installation, the threads of the threaded connections of the exhaust tract must be lubricated with copper-containing grease.

When installing, the system must be positioned so that there is no tension.

When installing the exhaust tract parts, all threaded connections are not tightened completely at first.

Hang the exhaust system with the suspension loops to the bottom of the car. All rubber rings should be located at the same distance, otherwise the exhaust system parts should be repositioned or the mounting hooks should be carefully bent.

Tighten all exhaust manifold threaded connections starting from the front. The tightening torque for all exhaust manifold threaded connections is 25 Nm.

Attention: All exhaust tract parts must have sufficient distance from the body.
