It is very rarely necessary to replace two or all three mufflers at the same time, however, unfortunately, after a few months the next one fails. Therefore, they often change the entire exhaust tract as a whole. We do not insist on doing this, since the individual parts of the Audi exhaust tract are simply twisted together and not inserted one into the other. Removing a separate part of the pipe can be done without much difficulty.
Tap the faulty muffler around the circumference with a hammer, as well as from the ends. It shouldn't be too strong though.
If a clear sound is heard with each blow, then the tin has already become thinner and will soon collapse, especially if it is winter and the road is sprinkled with salt.
When buying spare parts, you also need to buy a gasket (gaskets) and self-locking nuts.
Removing the exhaust tract
Here are only general instructions for removing the exhaust tract. The position of the fasteners and suspension parts are shown in the figure. Details of the exhaust tract are quite easily detached from each other.
1 Connecting the main muffler to the additional
2 Connecting the pre-silencer to the main
3 Front exhaust pipe connection with pre-muffler or catalytic converter
Support the car, securely fixing it.
If the threaded connection cannot be removed during dismantling, do not turn the bolt together with the nut in a circle. and try to break the bolt (in this case it breaks). The exception is the threaded connections on the engine exhaust manifold.
The nuts on the exhaust manifold studs can, in extreme cases, be knocked off with a chisel. They are usually made of very soft metal with an embedded helix. The threaded part can then be removed from the studs separately. The new nuts from the exhaust repair kit are made from the same soft metal. No other nuts may be used.
The threads of the threaded connections of the exhaust tract must be lubricated with a grease containing copper before installation.
When installing, you need to position the system so that there is no interference.
When installing parts of the exhaust tract, all threaded connections are not completely tightened at first.
Hang the exhaust tract with suspension loops to the bottom of the car. All rubber rings must be located at the same distance, otherwise the parts of the exhaust tract must be repositioned or the fastening hooks must be carefully bent.
Tighten all screw connections in the exhaust tract, starting from the front. The tightening torque for all threaded connections in the exhaust tract is 25 Nm.
Attention. All parts of the exhaust tract must be sufficiently removed from the body.
