Removal

Caution: On vehicles equipped with an airbag, before carrying out work, disconnect both wires from the battery and from the backup power source. Failure to do so may result in unexpected deployment of the airbag and possible injury.

Models without airbag

Set the steering wheel to the center position. Disconnect the negative wire from the battery. Pull off the center cushion with the contact for the horn and disconnect the wire. Mark the position of the steering wheel in relation to the steering control room.

Remove the steering wheel mounting nut and the steering wheel itself.

To install, align the marks made earlier and tighten the nut to a torque of 41 Nm.

Note: Do not hit or knock the steering wheel. The safety steering column may be damaged.

Models with airbag

Set the steering wheel to the center position.

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

Remove the side trim from the center console and disconnect the red power plug from the airbag.

Caution: The backup power source can deploy the air bag even if the battery is disconnected. The power plug on the air bag must be disconnected.

Remove the steering column upper trim screws and remove the trim.

Disconnect the airbag coil spring connector.

Remove the airbag mounting bolts (with TORX head)

Disconnect the airbag assembly, lift the clamp and remove the airbag wires from their terminals. Place the removed airbag assembly face up in a safe place to prevent it from deploying.

Remove the steering wheel mounting nut and remove the steering wheel, which may require a puller.

If the coil spring is removed, the front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position. Do not twist the spring after removal.

Installation

To install, align the alignment marks and tighten the nut to a torque of 41 Nm.

Caution: Never hit or knock the steering wheel. The safety steering column may be damaged.

Install the airbag assembly, airbag connector and TORX head bolts. Tighten these bolts to 60 Nm.

Install the upper steering column trim panel.

Connect the airbag system power connector.

Install the side trim panels on the center console.

Connect the negative wire to the battery.
