Front-wheel drive models

The exhaust manifold is attached to the cylinder head.

This is followed by the front exhaust pipe, which, in both the 4-cylinder and 5-cylinder models, is a double pipe that transitions into a single pipe.

The exhaust system of the 6-cylinder engine is designed completely differently, in which each of the two front exhaust pipes is equipped with a catalytic converter.

The catalytic converter with a welded short pipe section is the next unit in the exhaust system of 4- and 5 - cylinder engines. In the 6 - cylinder engine, things are different again: here, in models with a step gearbox, short pipe sections are located. In cars with an automatic transmission, the left catalytic converter is equipped with a connection for the right catalytic converter.

The middle and additional mufflers are installed further away.

The additional silencer illustrates the hierarchy of the models: both 6-cylinder models have two exhaust pipes.

All-wheel drive models [quattro]

Up to the catalytic converter, the exhaust systems of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models are the same. Then the differences begin:

For a 6-cylinder engine (as in front-wheel drive models with automatic transmission) the left catalytic converter is equipped with a connection for the right catalytic converter.

The middle muffler consists of two separate small mufflers, closely following one another.

Then the additional muffler is connected. During factory production, it is manufactured together with the middle muffler as one part. During repairs, the additional muffler can only be purchased as a separate spare part.

The exhaust system is secured to the so-called gearbox carrier by means of a spring-loaded suspension.

Left: Arrows point to both spring-loaded suspensions on the exhaust system of a 4-cylinder engine.

Right: In the 6-cylinder engine in the all-wheel drive model, both catalytic converters (2 and 3) are attached to the gearbox by means of a central bracket (1) loaded with spring force.
