Front wheel drive models
An exhaust manifold is attached to the cylinder head.
This is followed by the front exhaust pipe, which, both in models with a 4-cylinder engine and in models with a 5-cylinder engine, is made of a double pipe that turns into a single pipe.
The exhaust system of the 6-cylinder engine is completely different, in which each of the two front exhaust pipes is equipped with a catalyst.
The catalytic converter with a welded short pipe is the next node in the exhaust system for 4- and 5-cylinder engines. With the 6-cylinder engine, again, everything is different: here, in models with a stepped gearbox, short pipe sections are located. In vehicles with automatic transmission, the left catalytic converter is immediately equipped with a connection for the right catalytic converter.
The middle and additional mufflers are installed even further.
The example of an additional muffler demonstrates the model hierarchy: both 6-cylinder models have two exhaust pipes.
All-wheel drive models [quattro]
Before the catalytic converter, the exhaust systems of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models are the same. Then the differences begin:
For a 6-cylinder engine (as in front-wheel drive models with automatic transmission) the left catalyst is equipped directly with a connection for the right catalyst.
The middle muffler consists of two separate small mufflers that follow closely one after the other.
Then an additional silencer is connected. At the factory, it is manufactured together with the middle muffler in the form of one piece. When repairing, the additional muffler can only be purchased as a separate spare part.

4-cylinder engine:
1 - front exhaust pipe;
2 - catalyst;
5 - middle muffler;
6 - additional muffler.
5-cylinder engine:
3 - front exhaust pipe;
4 - catalyst;
5 - middle muffler;
6 - additional muffler.
5-cylinder engine/speed gearbox:
7 - exhaust pipes with catalysts;
8 - intermediate pipes;
9 - middle muffler;
10 - additional muffler.
6-cylinder engine/automatic transmission:
11 - exhaust pipes with catalysts;
12 - middle muffler;
13 - additional muffler.
4-cylinder quattro engine:
1 - front exhaust pipe;
12 - catalyst;
13 - middle muffler;
14 - additional muffler.
5-cylinder engine of all-wheel drive model:
3 - front exhaust pipe;
4 - catalyst;
13 - middle muffler;
14 - additional muffler.
6-cylinder engine of all-wheel drive model:
11 - exhaust pipes with catalysts;
13 - middle muffler;
14 - additional muffler.
The exhaust system is supported by a spring-loaded suspension to the so-called gearbox holder.
Left: Arrows point to both spring-loaded suspensions on the exhaust system in a 4-cylinder engine.
Right: in a 6-cylinder engine in an all-wheel drive model, both catalysts (2 and 3) attached to the gearbox with a central bracket (1), loaded with spring force.
