Table of contents: Topping up oil ↓ Can different types of oil be mixed? ↓
You can't grease it... This old rule applies especially to a car, and in it, first and foremost, to engine lubrication. Because the highest demands are placed on engine oil. Along with the best lubricating ability, it must be resistant to temperature effects, resistant to ageing, able to act as a cooling agent, and able to keep dirt particles suspended.

If you just bought an Audi-100 (new or used), it would be better if you checked the oil level at each fill-up. If it becomes clear that the engine is consuming very little oil, then you can increase the check interval to every second or even every fourth fill-up:
  • Stop on a horizontal platform.
  • After turning off the engine preheated to operating temperature, you should wait at least another five minutes so that the oil can drain into the pan. But it is more effective - before the first start of a still cold engine.
  • Be careful with a hot engine to avoid burning your hands.
  • Pull out the dipstick (oil level indicator), wipe it with a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel, reinsert it all the way, wait a bit, and pull it out again.
  • You will see the oil level at the tip of the dipstick.
  • If the oil level only reaches the lower mark, you need to add oil to the engine.

Topping up oil

The difference between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick is 1 liter. The oil level should not fall below the lower mark. If there is only a quarter liter less oil than necessary, then there is no need to worry about the engine yet. But if the oil level is even lower, and the car is driven in a sharp manner, then the oil pressure can drop to a dangerous level, which is immediately indicated by the oil pressure warning buzzer.

Too much oil in the engine is also unwise. At high revs, oil can get through the crankcase ventilation system into the combustion chambers. For the catalytic converter, excess oil in the exhaust gases is as dangerous as untreated gasoline, since it can lead to breakdown. However, with a normal oil level, there is no such danger. At what level of oil it should be added depends on the driving style.

With a moderate driving style, it will be enough to add oil when its level drops to the lower mark.

If you drive aggressively, it is recommended to add oil if the level is in the lower third or quarter between the two marks. More oil can perform cooling functions better.

Note: Oil in small quantities is more expensive than in three- or five-liter canisters. However, such canisters are usually not very convenient for adding oil on the road. In addition, they take up space in the trunk. For precise dosing of oil, a one-liter canister with a screw-on lid is more suitable.

Can different types of oil be mixed?

Oil grades from all manufacturers can be safely mixed with each other, as well as seasonal oil with all-season oil. This ability to mix without harmful effects is a basic requirement of international oil standards. Although the specific properties of a particular oil may undergo slight changes when mixed with another motor oil, because each oil grade has its own combination of additives. However, such mixing does not have a threatening effect on the lubricating effect. Those who adhere to the oil standards specified by Audi can rest assured that an unsuitable mixture will not cause engine damage.
