Constantly checking
The hazard warning lights must be ready for operation at all times, so their switch is powered via a fuse directly from the positive terminal of the battery. The direction indicators, on the other hand, are powered from terminal 15 only when the ignition is on.
With the ignition off, press the hazard warning switch on the instrument panel.
All four turn signals, the indicator light in the hazard switch and both turn signal indicators should begin to flash in the same rhythm.
Turn off the hazard warning lights and turn on the ignition.
When you press the direction indicator lever, one side of the direction indicator lights and the green direction indicator corresponding to the selected direction should flash regularly.
Malfunctions of direction indicators
If the green indicator flashes rapidly when the turn signals are on, one of the bulbs has burned out. If one of the hazard warning lights fails, this does not affect the flashing rhythm. Replacing the bulbs is described in Chapter "Lighting".
If the indicators remain on continuously when the turn signals or hazard warning lights are turned on, the turn signal relay is faulty, see the following text.
If the turn signals blink slowly and then quickly, and all plug connections, including the ground wire, are OK, then the relay needs to be replaced.
If only the hazard warning lights work, but not the direction indicators, or vice versa, then there is no power supply through the corresponding fuse or the corresponding switch is faulty (removal, see chapter "Instruments and auxiliary devices").
The turn signal relay on the Audi-100 is not in the relay block, but separately, and is attached with a bracket to the dashboard. This way, the characteristic interruption sound is better heard. Removal is described below.
Removed turn signal flasher
Remove the instrument panel.
Remove the relay with the wires and bracket connected.
Disconnect the multi-pin plug.
Help with faulty turn signal relay
Driving with a faulty turn signal is not so safe, because in heavy traffic, and especially in the dark, your intention to turn will not be entirely clear to other road users. In this case:
Remove the turn signal relay.
Install a jumper between terminals 49 and 49a.
Wrap a paper clip or short piece of wire around the tabs on the relay and reinsert it.
When the turn signal lever is pressed, the lamps will now be on continuously.
By turning them on and off with a lever, you can achieve rhythmic flashing.
