Removal
1. Place chocks under the front wheels.
2. Loosen the rear wheel mounting bolts.
3. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle.
4. Finally, loosen the mounting bolts and remove the rear wheel.
5. Knock off the hub nut protective cap with a rubber-tipped hammer.
6. Remove the cotter pin and remove the hub nut retainer.
7. Unscrew the hub nut and remove the washer.
8. Using a screwdriver, push the adjusting wedge upwards through the threaded hole for the wheel bolts in the brake drum to bring the brake shoes together.
9. Remove the brake drum.
10. Remove the outer bearing from the hub.
11. From the inside of the hub, remove the seal and inner bearing if they are not still on the journal.
12. If it is necessary to replace the bearings, press the outer rings out of the hub using a copper drift.
Installation
1. Press the outer rings of both bearings into the hub using appropriate mandrels. Make sure that the smaller inner diameters of the outer rings are directed towards the inside of the hub.
2. Install the inner bearing into the corresponding outer race in the hub, after lubricating it with consistent grease.
3. Press the seal into the hub flush with the end face, the working edge of which should be directed towards the inside of the hub.
4. Place consistent grease into the inner cavity of the hub and install the brake drum on the journal.
5. Install the outer bearing into the hub, after lubricating it with consistent grease.
6. Install the washer and tighten the hub nut.
7. Install the wheel and tighten the mounting bolts.
8. Adjust the hub bearings (see Fig. subsection 8.2.5).
9. Fill the hub nut cap two-thirds full with grease and press it into place using a suitable mandrel. Crumpled or cracked caps must be replaced (to prevent dirt and moisture from entering the hub).
10. Lower the vehicle onto its wheels and tighten the wheel mounting bolts evenly to a torque of 110 N·m (11.0 kgf·m).
11. Adjust the parking brake (see subsection 10.13.1).
