Removal and installation the engine (Audi 100 C3)

Removal



Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.

Open the expansion tank cap.

Disconnect the outlet hose from the thermostat housing pipe and drain the coolant.

Remove the hood lock cable retainer and pull out the cable.

Remove the clutch cable from the adjusting sleeve.

Disconnect the hose from the engine cooling and interior heating systems.

Disconnect the electrical wires from the switch sensor and from the electric cooling fan.

Remove the fan shroud.

Remove the radiator.

Disconnect the fuel supply and return hoses from the fuel pump.

Disconnect the wires from the electrical components and units installed on the engine.

Disconnect the vacuum hoses and control cables from the carburetor.

Remove the air filter.

Remove the hood.

While working underneath the vehicle, perform the following operations.

Remove the right engine mount bracket protective shield.

Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold flange.

Disconnect the wires from the starter and disconnect its plug connectors.

Slightly loosen the nut of the right engine mount bracket mounting bolt.

Remove the starter.

Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the gearbox bracket.

Remove the lower bolts securing the gearbox to the engine.

Remove the lower clutch housing cover.

Slightly loosen the nut of the left engine mount bracket mounting bolt.

On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove the torque converter mounting bolts.

Raise the front of the transmission using some kind of device.



Suspend the power unit using a hoist.

Remove the engine mount brackets.

Remove the bolts securing the engine to the gearbox.

Disconnect the ground jumper from the engine.

Remove the engine from the powertrain compartment.

On vehicles with automatic transmission, lock the torque converter in the clutch housing.

Installation



On vehicles with a manual transmission, apply a thin layer of grease to the splines of the transmission input shaft.

Install the engine assembly with the intake manifold, exhaust manifold and generator into the powertrain compartment.

Connect the engine to the gearbox.

Install the engine mount brackets.

Remove the front part of the gearbox from the stand.

On vehicles with automatic transmission, tighten the torque converter bolts to the flywheel.

Install the starter.

Install the lower clutch housing cover.

Tighten the lower engine mounting bolts to the gearbox.

Secure the exhaust pipe to the intake manifold flange using a new gasket.

Attach the exhaust pipe to the gearbox bracket.

Connect the wires to the starter and connect the starter plugs.

Install the right engine bracket protective shield.

Connect the plug connectors of the electrical components and units installed on the engine and attach the wires to them.

Connect the control cables and vacuum hoses to the carburetor.

Connect the fuel hoses to the fuel pump.

Connect the cooling system and interior heating hoses to the engine.

Install the radiator.

Install the fan shroud.

Connect the wires to the electric cooling fan and the switch sensor.



Connect the cooling system hoses to the radiator pipes.

Fill the cooling system with coolant.

Install and adjust the position of the hood lock drive cable.

Install and adjust the position of the clutch cable.

Install the air filter.

Install the powertrain compartment hood.

Check coolant and oil levels and top them up if necessary.

Connect the negative cable to the negative terminal of the battery.

Start the engine and check its operation.
