1. Drain the cooling system as described in Chapter 3.
4-cylinder engines
2. Remove the generator and drive belt.
3. Unscrew the pulley from the water pump drive flange.
4. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the hoses from the rear of the water pump housing (photo).

5. Loosen the nut and remove the special bolt securing the lower gear cover to the water pump assembly.
6. Unscrew the water pump assembly from the cylinder block and remove the O-ring (photo).

7. Unscrew the bolts, remove the water pump from the casing. Remove the gasket.
5-cylinder engines
8. Remove the alternator drive belt and, where applicable, the air conditioning compressor drive belt.
9. Remove the power steering pump, leaving the hoses connected, and move them to one side.
10. Loosen the nuts and lift the outer cover of the timing belt.
11. Loosen, but do not remove, the bolt securing the camshaft timing gear to the camshaft.
12. Set cylinder #1 to TDC on compression (see Section 1, if necessary).
13. Loosen the water pump installation and adjustment bolts, rotate the pump to relieve the tension of the timing belt. Remove the timing belt from the water pump and camshaft gears. Do not turn the camshaft or crankshaft with the timing belt removed.
14. Loosen the camshaft timing gear mounting bolt and remove the timing gear.
15. Remove the bolts securing the water pump and the inner lining of the timing belt to the engine.
16. Lift the inner cover of the timing belt, remove the water pump and O-ring (photo).

All models
17. If the water pump is faulty, replace it. Clean the mating surfaces of the water pump, cylinder block and pump housing (4-cylinder engines).
18. Installation is carried out in the reverse order, using a new O-ring or gasket. For 5-cylinder engines, check that the camshaft and crankshaft are set to TDC on compression for cylinder No.1 and adjust the timing belt tension correctly.
19. Install the power steering pump, and the air conditioning compressor and alternator drive belts.
20. Fill the cooling system as described in Chapter 5.
