4 cylinder engines
2. Remove the alternator and drive belt.
3. Unscrew the pulley from the water pump drive flange.
4. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the hoses from the back of the water pump housing (photo).
5. Unscrew the nut and remove the special bolt that secures the lower gear cover to the water pump assembly.
6. Unscrew the water pump assembly from the cylinder block, and remove the O-ring (photo).
7. Turn off bolts, remove the water pump from a casing. Remove the gasket.
5 cylinder engines
8. Remove the alternator drive belt and, where available, the air conditioning compressor drive belt.
9. Remove the power steering pump, leaving the associated hoses and move them to one side.
10. Loosen the nuts and lift the outer timing belt cover.
11. Loosen but do not remove the bolt securing the camshaft sprocket to the camshaft.
12. Set cylinder #1 to TDC on compression (see section 1, if it is needed).
13. Loosen the water pump mounting and adjustment bolts, rotate the pump to loosen the timing belt tension. Remove the timing belt from the water pump and camshaft gears. Do not turn the camshaft or crankshaft with the timing belt removed.
14. Turn off a bolt of fastening of a cogwheel of a camshaft and remove a cogwheel.
15. Remove the bolts securing the water pump and inner cover of the drive timing belt to the engine.
16. Lift the inner cover of the timing belt drive, remove the water pump and O-ring (photo).
All models
17. If the water pump is faulty, replace it. Clean mating surfaces of water pump, cylinder block and pump housing (4 cylinder engines).
18. Install in reverse order, use a new O-ring or gasket. For 5-cylinder engines, check that the camshaft and crankshaft are set to compression TDC for cylinder No. 1 and adjust the timing belt tension correctly.
19. Install the power steering pump, and the air conditioning compressor and alternator drive belts.
20. Fill the cooling system as described in Chapter 5.
