Rear hub bearings — removal, installation and adjustment (Audi 100 C3)

1. Block the front wheels, jack up the rear of the car. Remove the corresponding rear wheel, release the handbrake.

2. Remove the cover in the center of the brake drum.

3. Remove the pin and remove the ring.

4. Unscrew the nut and remove the thrust washer.

5. Remove the brake drum.

6. Remove the brake caliper and mounting bracket as described in Section 9, do not disconnect the hydraulic hose. Secure the caliper.

7. Remove the brake disc from the hub.

8. Remove the cover in the center of the hub (photo).

12. Remove the outer bearing inner race and rollers from the hub/brake drum.



13. Remove the oil seal from inside the hub/brake drum and take out the inner bearing inner race and rollers.

14. Knock out the outer races from each side of the hub/brake drum.

15. Clean the bearings and hub/brake drum, wipe the stub axle. Check the condition of the rollers, inner and outer rings of the hub/brake drum, stub axle. If the bearing surfaces are worn, replace them. Prepare a new oil seal.

16. Lubricate the bearing housing and rollers with lithium grease, and also place grease into the hub/brake drum.

17. Insert the outer rings into the hub/brake drum.

18. Insert the inner ring of the inner bearing and rollers, position the oil seal with the sealing lip lining inside, insert it. Lubricate the seal lip, then wipe the surface.

19. Position the hub/brake drum on the stub axle, install the outer wheel bearing, then the thrust washer and nut (photo).

20. Tighten the nut, then unscrew it until the thrust washer moves (photo).

21. Install the locking ring without moving the nut, install a new pin.



22. Insert the cover onto the drum.

23. Where fitted, install the disc, then the caliper assembly as described in Section 9.

24. Install the wheel and lower the vehicle.
