The service intervals in this manual are based on the assumption that you will perform all the work. This is the minimum amount of work that we believe is necessary for a vehicle in daily use for years. If you intend to operate your vehicle in extreme conditions all the time, you should also perform some procedures more frequently. We recommend more frequent service because it increases efficiency, improves performance, and increases the value of the vehicle.
Note: Mileage in kilometers is approximate.
Audi A4 cars are equipped with a service interval indicator, the display of which is located on the front panel. Each time the engine is started, the following information is displayed on the display for a few seconds:
Models before 1997
OIL - requires maintenance at 15,000 km interval.
IN1 - maintenance is required at intervals of 12 months, 30,000 km or 60,000 km depending on the mileage.
IN₂ - Maintenance required at 24 month interval.
Models after 1997
Service OIL - maintenance required at 15,000 km interval.
Service INSP - service is required at intervals of 12 months, 30,000 km, 60,000 km, 120,000 km or 24 months, depending on the mileage.
It is very important to follow the maintenance schedule, when changing the oil, Audi service station mechanics reprogram the indicator so that the next interval is 15,000 km - the display shows OIL. 1000 km or 10 days before the next interval, the indicator starts to show it. Even if a speedometer and odometer calibrated in miles are installed, the indicator is programmed in kilometers.
Note: The "long-term" maintenance schedule was only introduced in late 1999 and should only be used on models from the 2000 model year onwards. All the details of the maintenance schedules were not available at the time of writing - please contact your VAE dealer for more detailed information.
Every 400 km or weekly
See section "Weekly checks".
Every 15,000 km
Changing engine oil and filter (see paragraph 3).
Note: Because oil and filter changes are beneficial to engine longevity, we recommend more frequent oil and filter changes, especially on vehicles driven in severe conditions or when driving short distances with a cold engine, at least twice a year.
Checking the thickness of the front brake pads (paragraph 4).
Checking the condition of the auxiliary drive belt (paragraph 5).
Checking the condition of the timing belt (paragraph 6).
Resetting the maintenance period indicator (paragraph 7).
Every 12 months (display indication "In 1" or "service INSP")
Checking the functionality of the windshield washer system, the fifth door glass and headlights (paragraph 8).
Checking tire wear (paragraph 9).
Lubrication of hinges and locks (paragraph 10).
Checking the electrolyte level in the battery (paragraph 11).
Reading fault codes in the engine control unit (paragraph 12).
Checking for leaks under the hood (paragraph 13).
Checking the antifreeze content in the coolant (paragraph 14).
Checking the condition of hoses and tubes (paragraph 15).
Checking the thickness of the rear brake pads (paragraph 16).
Checking the condition of the exhaust system (paragraph 17).
Checking the condition of the steering system and suspension (paragraph 18).
Roadside checks (paragraph 19).
Every 30,000 km or once a year (display indication "In 1" or "service INSP")
In addition to the checks listed, perform the following:
Replacing the fuel filter (paragraph 20).
Replacing the cabin ventilation filter (paragraph 21).
Checking the condition of the anti-corrosion coating of the bottom (paragraph 22).
Checking the oil level in a manual transmission (paragraph 23).
Headlight adjustment (paragraph 24).
Every 60,000 km (display indication "In 1" or "service INSP")
In addition to the above checks, perform the following:
Replacing the air filter element (paragraph 25).
Replacing spark plugs (paragraph 26).
Checking the oil level and topping it up in the main gear (AKLP) (paragraph 27).
Replacing hydraulic fluid in automatic transmission (paragraph 28).
Timing belt replacement (paragraph 29).
Note: Manufacturers recommend replacing the timing belt every 130,000 km, but we recommend reducing this interval to 60,000 km, especially if the car is used in short trips with frequent starts ("mail" mode). The relevance of timely replacement of the timing belt is obvious, since its breakage can cause serious damage to the engine. Although, of course, the choice of replacement interval remains with the owner.
Every 120,000 km (display indication "In 1" or "service INSP")
Replacement of auxiliary drive belts.
Every 2 years (regardless of mileage) (display indication "In 1" or "service INSP")
Replacing brake fluid (paragraph 31).
Replacing the coolant (paragraph 32).
Checking the composition of exhaust gases (paragraph 33).
