When the parking brake is applied, the switch at the parking brake lever forms a connection with the "ground". This should light the indicator, which is supplied with current when the ignition is on (voltage). When the brake is released, the indicator goes out again.
The lamp does not light when the handbrake is applied: check the fuse (chapter "Body electrical system").
Remove and check the incandescent lamp (see beginning of chapter).
If this does not work, release the switch at the rear of the parking brake lever after removing the rear center console (see the "Interior" chapter), disconnect the wire from the switch (at the back next to the lever) and bring the plug to the bare metal.
If the lamp now lights up, then the switch is faulty.
The lamp does not go out when the parking brake is released: disconnect the wire from the parking brake switch as described above, but leave the plug hanging in the air.
If the lamp goes out, the switch is faulty or installed incorrectly.
If it continues to burn, it means that the cable has frayed somewhere and a short circuit to ground occurs.
