Spark plug designations
With the designations shown in the table on the next page, you will get the right spark plug for your vehicle. What is behind the numbers and letters?
Heat rating: spark plugs must be rated for the temperatures that occur in the engine during combustion. The index tells how much heat the spark plug can take away without overheating itself. If too much heat is removed from the spark plug, it will not reach its self-cleaning temperature and soot will form on the spark plug electrodes.
Electrodes: The Audi-100 uses spark plugs with three electrodes.
Candle thread: its length for spark plugs for the Audi-100 is 19 mm; thread diameter - 14 mm.
Wrench size: Spark plug hex should be 20.8mm wide for 4- and 5-cylinder models, 16mm for 6-cylinder engines.
Contact surface: Spark plugs with a flat contact surface are prescribed for all engines. They are fitted with a non-falling O-ring, so no additional O-ring needs to be inserted.
