Depending on the configuration, the cars were equipped with mechanical steering or power steering. Steering with a rack and pinion mechanism with spiral teeth and a trauma-safe steering column. The steering drive consists of two horizontal rods and rotary levers of the telescopic struts of the front suspension. A steering shock absorber is installed on the mechanical steering.

Cars equipped with the PROKON-TEN passive safety system have a collapsible steering column made of corrugated pipe.

Steering gear ratio:
  • mechanical steering: 24.80:1;
  • power steering: 18.70:1.

Minimum turning diameter, m:
  • vehicles with mechanical steering: 10.80±0.50;
  • vehicles with power steering: 11.95±0.53.

Number of steering wheel turns between extreme positions:
  • cars with manual steering: 4.7;
  • vehicles with power steering: 3.5.

Power steering

The power steering pump is a high-pressure piston type. It is driven by a V-belt from the crankshaft pulley. The power steering layout combines the distributor, power cylinder and steering gear into one unit.

Since July 1987, a new high-pressure pump was installed on vehicles with hydraulic power steering, which differed from the previous one mainly in the larger diameter of the connecting elements.

The sealing of the power steering system hoses is ensured not by metal ring gaskets, but by round sealing rings on each hose fitting.

Capacity of hydraulic steering system, l:
  • cars without body position control: 1.6;
  • cars with body position regulator: 2.7.

Power steering pump discharge pressure when the engine is idling, kg/cm²: 145-155.

Power steering pump drive belt

Belt dimensions, mm:
  • 4-cylinder vehicles: 9.50x730.00;
  • cars with 5-cylinder engines: 12.50x960.00.

Brand and type of belt:
  • cars with 4-cylinder engines: Gates 62 08 MC or Continental 533;
  • cars with 5-cylinder engines: Gates 64 68 MS or Continental 1994.

Tightening torques of main threaded connections, kgf·m

Right steering gear housing mounting bolt: 2.5.

Left steering gear housing mounting bolt: 2.0.

Steering shock absorber mounting bolt: 4.0.

Steering shaft clamp bolt nut:
  • mechanical steering: 2.0;
  • power steering: 2.5.

Steering tie rod ball joint nut: 6.0.

Tie rod end mounting bolt: 6.0.

Steering wheel mounting nut: 4.0.

Steering wheel mounting bolt: 9.0.
