2. Loosen and remove the upper transmission-to-engine mounting bolts, working from inside the engine compartment.
3. Remove the bolt securing the ground strap to the gearbox.
4. Disconnect the wiring from the speedometer sensor and, where used, the Lambda sensor.
5. Apply the parking brake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands.
6. Support the front of the engine with a support beam or winch.
7. From underneath the vehicle, unscrew and remove the engine splash shield and front transmission cover.
8. Unscrew the frame from the engine.
9. Remove the exhaust outlet pipe as described in Section 3.
10. Remove the starter as described in Section 12.
11. Through the hole in the front cover, remove the bolts securing the torque converter to the drive plate. You will need to rotate the engine to access each bolt.
12. Place a container under the rear of the transmission. Loosen the union nut, remove the dipstick tube from the pan, and drain the fluid.
13. Disconnect the hoses from the fluid cooler on the rear of the transmission. Cap the open ends to prevent dust and dirt from entering.
14. Unscrew the splash guard of the right drive shaft.
15. Loosen and remove the bolts securing the inner CV joints of the drive shafts to the transmission drive flanges. Note the location of the bolt plates. Tie up the drive shafts. Remove the shims where used.
16. Unscrew and remove the level/filler dipstick tube.
17. Remove the spring clip, disconnect the kickdown cable from the transmission side lever.
18. Unscrew the shift cable holder hanger, disconnect the shift cable from the lever on the transmission.
19. Support the weight of the transmission with a jack.
20. Loosen and remove the transmission mounting bolts.
21. Lower the jack slightly and raise the front of the engine to position the transmission at a suitable angle for removal.
22. Loosen and remove the lower transmission-to-engine mounting bolts.
23. Disconnect the transmission from the engine. Make sure the torque converter remains completely in the transmission grooves. Remove the transmission from under the vehicle. To prevent the torque converter from being pulled out of the grooves and losing fluid, bolt a suitable piece of metal plate to one of the mounting bolt holes.
24. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Make sure that the torque converter is fully engaged in the grooves of the transmission pump. To check this, place the edge of a straightedge across the clutch housing and check that the distance to the torque converter is approximately 10 mm for the 087 model, or 30 mm for the 089 model. Note that the pump drive plate will be damaged if the transmission is bolted to the engine with the torque converter incorrectly installed. Install the starter as described in Section 12, the exhaust outlet pipe as described in Section 3. If necessary, adjust the kickdown and shift cables as described in Chapters 9, 10 and 11.
