2. Loosen and remove the upper transmission-to-engine bolts, working from inside the engine compartment.
3. Remove the bolt securing the ground strap to the transmission.
4. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the speedometer sensor and, where used, the Lambda sensor.
5. Apply the parking brake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands.
6. Support the front of the engine with a support beam or winch.
7. Under the vehicle, unscrew and remove the engine mudguard and transmission front protective cover.
8. Unscrew the frame from the engine.
9. Remove the exhaust outlet pipe as described in Section 3.
10. Remove the starter as described in Section 12.
11. Remove the bolts securing the torque converter to the drive plate through the opening in the front cover. It will be necessary to rotate the engine to gain access to each bolt.
12. Place a container under the rear of the transmission. Unscrew the union nut, remove the dipstick tube from the sump, drain the liquid.
13. Disconnect the hoses from the fluid cooler at the rear of the transmission. Cap open ends to prevent dust and dirt from entering.
14. Turn off a mudguard of the right power shaft.
15. Unscrew and remove the bolts securing the inner CV joints of the drive shafts to the transmission drive flanges. Note the location of the bolt plates. Tie up the drive shafts. Remove gaskets where used.
16. Unscrew and remove the dipstick/filler tube.
17. Remove the spring clip, disconnect the lowering cable (kickdown) from the lever on the transmission side.
18. Turn off a suspension bracket of the holder of a cable of switching, disconnect a cable of switching from the lever on transmission.
19. Support the weight of the transmission with a jack.
20. Loosen and remove the transmission mounting bolts.
21. Slightly lower the jack, raise the front of the engine to position the transmission at a suitable angle for removal.
22. Unscrew and remove the lower transmission-to-engine bolts.
23. Disconnect the transmission from the engine. Make sure that the torque converter remains completely in the transmission slots. Get transmission from under the car. To prevent the torque converter from pulling out of the slots and losing fluid, bolt a suitable piece of metal plate to one of the mounting bolt holes.
24. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Make sure the torque converter is fully engaged on the transmission pump slots. To check this, place the edge of a straightedge across the clutch housing and check that the distance to the torque converter is approximately 10mm for the 087 model, or 30mm for the 089 model. Note that the pump drive plate will be damaged if the transmission is bolted to an engine with an incorrectly installed torque converter. Install the starter as described in Section 12, exhaust pipe, as described in Section 3. If necessary, adjust the lowering cables (kickdown) and switching as described in Chapters 9, 10 And 11.
