1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the center console as described in Section 11. Select position 'P'.
3. Unscrew the handle from the select lever.
4. Remove the screws, lift the selector cover. Disconnect the lamp wiring and, if applicable, the blocking traction relay.
5. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the starter inhibitor switch, and on later models, from the blocking traction relay.
6. Raise the rubber boot on the select lever.
7. Raise the front of the car and support it on axle stands. Remove the bottom heat shield.
8. Disconnect the cable from the transmission lever, the selector lever (one nut), and support the suspension.
9. Unscrew the suspension, lift the assembly off the floor.
10. Turn off an adjusting pin, separate the selector lever from the lever of a gear change, take away the plug and springs.
11. Remove the retaining ring, remove the gearshift lever from the suspension. Take the washer, bearing and bushing.
12. Where is it used (on later models), unscrew the blocking traction relay.
13. Unscrew the inhibitor switch.
14. Clean all parts, wipe dry.
15. Assembly is in reverse order, but note the following additional points. Apply a suitable insulator to the hanger before bolting it into position. The cable hanger must face the angled end of the select lever. Apply grease to the ends of the cable. Install the cable first in the clamp sleeve, and then on the suspension. On models from August 1988, adjust the blocking traction relay as follows. Select the 'R' position, then use a feeler gauge to check the distance between the lever and the traction relay, it should be 1 mm. If not, loosen the bolt, move the traction relay and tighten the bolt. The casing of the selector lever after installing the traction relay must be adjusted as follows. Move the select lever so that the solenoid pin fits into the hole, then install the shroud and align the 'N' mark with the lever. Tighten the bolts and check that the lever moves an equal distance to the 'R' and 'D' positions. Adjust the inhibitor switch as described in Chapter 12. Make sure the shift cable's protective rubber boot is in good condition, otherwise water ingress may cause the shift cable to rust and seize. To adjust the shift cable, select the 'P' position, then loosen the clamp bushing nut. Move the transmission lever to the 'P' position (rear limiter), then tighten the nut. Note that the brake pedal must be depressed before moving the select lever from the 'N' or 'P' positions.
