1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the center console as described in Section 11. Select position "P".
3. Unscrew the handle from the selection lever.
4. Remove the screws, lift the casing of the selector. Disconnect the wiring of the lamp and, if applicable, the traction relay of the lock.
5. Disconnect the wiring from the starter inhibitor switch and, on later models, from the starter inhibitor solenoid.
6. Lift the rubber boot on the selector lever.
7. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. Remove the underbody heat shield.
8. Disconnect the cable from the transmission lever, the selector lever (one nut), and support the suspension.
9. Unscrew the suspension, lift the assembly from the floor.
10. Unscrew the mounting pin, separate the selector lever from the gear shift lever, take away the bushing and springs.
11. Remove the retaining ring, remove the gearshift lever from the suspension. Take the washer, bearing and bushing.
12. Where is it used? (on later models), unscrew the traction blocking relay.
13. Unscrew the inhibitor switch.
14. Clean all parts and wipe dry.

15. Reassembly is in the reverse order but note the following additional points. Apply suitable insulator to the hanger before securing it with the bolts in position. The cable hanger should be with the angled end facing the selector lever. Apply grease to the ends of the cable. Fit the cable first into the clamp bushing and then onto the hanger. On models from August 1988 onwards, adjust the locking solenoid switch as follows. Select the "R" position then use a feeler gauge to check the distance between the lever and the solenoid switch, it should be 1 mm. If not, loosen the bolt, move the solenoid switch and tighten the bolt. The selector lever housing must be adjusted as follows after the solenoid switch has been installed. Move the selector lever so that the solenoid pin enters the hole, then fit the housing and align the "N" mark with the lever. Tighten the bolts and check that the lever moves an equal distance in the "R" and "D" positions. Adjust the inhibitor switch as described in Chapter 12. Make sure the protective rubber boot of the shift cable is in good condition, otherwise water may cause the cable to rust and jam. To adjust the cable, select the "P" position, then loosen the clamp sleeve nut. Move the transmission lever to the "P" position (rear limiter), then tighten the nut. Note that the brake pedal must be depressed before moving the selector lever from the "N" or "P" positions.
