1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the center console as described in Section 11. Select position 'P'.
3. Unscrew the handle from the gear selection lever.
4. Remove the screws, lift the selector cover. Disconnect the lamp wiring and, if applicable, the blocking traction relay.
5. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the starter inhibitor switch, and on later models, from the blocking traction relay.
6. Remove screws, get the switch.
7. Assembly is carried out in the reverse order. Adjust the switch as follows. On models before August 1988, select the 'P' position, then turn the suspension on the switch to the 'P' position until the switch is located in the shift lever. On models from August 1988, use a 4 mm drill bit or pin to secure the switch lever as shown in Fig. 7. 17. Move the selector lever to the 'N' position, then set the switch so that the moving clip engages the shift lever. Tighten the screws, remove the drill or pin. After installing the switch, check that the engine can only be started in the 'N' or 'P' positions and that the reversing lights come on in the 'R' position. If the switch does not operate correctly, slight adjustment may be required within the elongated holes.
