On vehicles with manual transmission, place the gearshift lever in neutral; for vehicles with automatic transmission, set the selector lever to "P"- parking or "N" - neutral.

Apply the handbrake.

In winter, when starting the engine with a manual transmission, fully depress the clutch pedal.

In winter, when starting the engine with a manual transmission, fully depress the clutch pedal.

Position of the key in the ignition switch:
  • O — the ignition key can be inserted and removed freely. When the key is removed, the anti-theft device is locked, the parking lights can be turned on;
  • 1 — ignition is on, battery discharge and oil pressure warning lights come on. On some models of the car, warning lights for coolant overheating, brake fluid level and power steering system may come on. The key cannot be removed;
  • 2 - Turn the key all the way clockwise and hold it in this position, overcoming the resistance of the return spring, to rotate the starter. While the key is in this position, the starter rotates continuously; as soon as the engine starts, release the key.

If the engine does not start the first time, turn off the ignition by setting the key to position "O", then try to start the starter again.

Note: When the starter is activated, the power supply for the windshield wiper, heater fan, and rear window heating is turned off; the exterior lighting switches to the side lights.

Starting a cold engine

To start a carburetor engine of the "DR" model with a carburetor with automatic starting and warming up:
  • slowly press the accelerator pedal all the way down (once at ambient temperatures above 10*, twice at lower temperatures) and then release the pedal;
  • turn on the starter without pressing the accelerator pedal;
  • if the engine does not start within 10 sec., wait 30 sec and try again;
  • in idle mode, as the engine warms up and picks up speed, reduce the speed by briefly pressing the accelerator pedal.

To start the engine of the "DS" model with a carburetor with automatic start and warm-up:
  • turn on the ignition and starter without pressing the accelerator pedal first;
  • if the engine does not start within 10 seconds, wait 30 seconds and try again.

To start a fuel injected engine:
  • lightly press the accelerator pedal and, holding it in this position, turn on the starter;
  • — if the engine does not start within 10 seconds, wait 30 seconds and try again.

Recommendations for starting the engine of cars with automatic transmission

In severe frosts, let the engine idle for 1 minute after starting.

Starting a warm engine

To start carburetor engines:
  • turning on the starter, gradually press the accelerator pedal;
  • release the accelerator pedal as soon as the engine starts.

Starting a warm engine equipped with a fuel injection system is done in the same way as a cold one.

Starting a hot engine

To start carburetor engines:
  • press the accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it firmly in this position without additional fuel pumping;
  • turn on the starter and, as soon as the engine starts, release the accelerator pedal.

Starting a hot engine equipped with a fuel injection system is done in the same way as a cold one.
