TO No.32
Lower the left side window. Stand next to the car.
Reach your hand out through the window and turn the steering wheel left and right.
Does the left front wheel turn from a straight ahead position immediately following the steering wheel turn? Watch the rim, as the elastic tire can "swallow" some of the movement.
Causes of steering play
Backlash in the steering gear can be caused by the following:
- The steering rack. The play that occurs here can probably be eliminated by adjusting;
- Broken tie rod joints;
- Defective joints on the articulated safety steering column;
- A faulty elastic disc coupling between the steering gear and the steering column.
