For reasons of fuel consumption and environmental protection, on some modifications the transmission is designed so that the maximum vehicle speed is reached only in the position «S».
The gearbox is also equipped with a tiptronic system. This system gives the driver, if desired, the possibility of manual shifting.
Automatic Transmission Instructions
Switching to higher and lower forward gears is carried out automatically.
Fragment of the center console: selector lever with lock button
Starting off
1. Press and hold the brake pedal.
2. Hold down the lock button (on the selector lever), move the selector lever to the desired position, e.g «D», and release the lock button.
3. Wait for the automation to switch on by creating a power connection between the gearbox and the drive wheels (at the moment of inclusion, a slight push is felt).
4. Release the brake pedal and press the accelerator pedal.
Short stops
1. Hold the car with the brake pedal, for example, at traffic lights.
2. At the same time, do not press the accelerator pedal.
Parking
1. Press and hold the brake pedal.
2. Fully tighten the handbrake.
3. While holding down the lock button, set the selector lever to the position «P» and release the lock button.
The engine can only be started when the selector lever is in position «R» or «N», cm. Features of operation and auxiliary systems.
When parking on level ground, it is enough to set the selector lever to the position «R». When the road is sloping, first tighten the handbrake to the stop and only then move the selector lever to the position «R». This reduces the load on the locking mechanism and makes it easier to move the selector lever out of position «R».
Selector lever positions
This section describes each selector lever position.
Display: selector lever positions
A highlighted indication of the actual position of the selector lever is displayed on the instrument panel display.
P - parking lock
In this position, the drive wheels are blocked mechanically. This position should only be enabled when the vehicle is stationary.
To set the selector lever to position «R» and its removal from this position, press the lock button (on the selector lever) and at the same time the brake pedal.
R - reverse gear
When the selector lever is in this position, reverse gear is engaged.
Engage reverse gear only when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is idling.
To set the selector lever to position «TO» press the lock button and the brake pedal at the same time. With the ignition on and the selector lever in position «R» reversing lights are on.
N - neutral position (idle position)
This position is the idle position.
D - basic position when moving forward
In this position, shifting to higher and lower forward gears is carried out automatically, depending on the engine load, speed and dynamic shift program (DPS).
To move the selector lever from position «R» into position «D» at a speed of less than 5 km / h or a stationary car, you must press the brake pedal.
Under certain circumstances, (e.g. when driving in mountains or with a trailer) it may be preferable to temporarily switch to the manual switching program, see below.
S - sports position
Set the selector lever to position «S» when driving in sport mode. Later switching to higher stages allows full use of the engine power reserves.
To move the selector lever from position «N» into position «S» at a speed of less than 5 km / h or a stationary vehicle, press the brake pedal
Warning: If the selector lever is moved unintentionally to the «N», before returning to mode «D» or «S», release the gas and wait for the rpm to drop to idle.
For reasons of fuel consumption and environmental protection, on some modifications the transmission is designed so that the maximum vehicle speed is reached only in the position «S»
Selector lever lock
The selector lever lock prevents the driving range from being switched on unintentionally and thus the vehicle to move from a standstill.
Unblocking is carried out as follows: 1. Turn on the ignition.
2. Depress the brake pedal and hold down the lock button at the same time.
Automatic selector lever lock
When the ignition is on, the selector lever is locked in position «P» And «N». To move it out of these positions, press the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, when the selector lever is in the positions «R» And «N» the following indication appears on the display:
Beim Einlegen einer Fahrstufe im Stand Fussbremse betatigen (when selecting the driving mode of a stationary vehicle, press the brake pedal).
In addition, the automatic selector lever lock symbol lights up on the selector lever gate.
The selector lever is only locked when the vehicle is stationary and at speeds up to 5 km/h. At a speed of approx. 5 km/h and above, the selector lever lock is automatically canceled when the selector lever is in position «N».
With fast (without pause) moving the selector lever through the position «N» (for example, from the position «R» into position «D») selector lever is not locked. This makes it possible, for example, to move «swinging» stuck car. If the selector lever is in the position for more than 1 second with the brake pedal released «N», then it is blocked.
Lock button
The selector lever lock button prevents the selector lever from being accidentally moved to certain positions. Pressing this button unlocks the selector lever.
Key lock in the ignition
After switching off the ignition, the key can only be removed from the lock when the selector lever is in position «R» (parking lock).
After removing the key from the lock, the lever is locked in position «R».
Kick-down device
The Kick-down device allows you to realize maximum acceleration.
When the accelerator pedal is pressed sharply with the transition of the resistance point, the automation switches, depending on the speed and speed, to a lower gear. Switching to the next higher gear occurs immediately after reaching the maximum engine speed corresponding to this gear.
Dynamic switching program (DPS)
The automatic transmission is controlled electronically.
The automatic transmission is controlled electronically. Switching to higher and lower gears is carried out according to the motion programs stored in the memory.
With a restrained driving style, the automation selects an economical shift program.
When driving in a temperamental manner with sudden acceleration and frequent speed changes, using the maximum speed or after sharply depressing the accelerator pedal (Kick-down) automation works in the range of sports programs. Late shifting to higher gears allows you to fully utilize the power reserve of the engine. Downshifting is carried out at higher engine speeds.
The choice of the optimal traffic program for specific conditions is a continuous process. However, regardless of this, you can switch to a more sporty program by pressing the accelerator pedal sharply. In this case, the gearbox shifts to a lower gear corresponding to the actual road speed, allowing for dynamic acceleration (for example, when overtaking) without the need to sharply press the accelerator pedal all the way. After switching back to the higher gear and with the corresponding driving mode, the operation according to the original program is restored.
The hill program controls gear selection on uphill and downhill runs. Thanks to this, it is not necessary to switch when driving uphill. Pressing the brake pedal while driving downhill switches to a lower gear. As a result, it is possible to brake with the engine without resorting to manual switching.
Tiptronic mode
The Tiptronic system also gives the driver the option of manual gear shifting.
Center console: manual shift position (tiptronic)
Display: manual shift indication
Switching to manual mode
Press the selector lever out of position «D» to the right. When manual mode is engaged, 5 4 3 2 1 appears on the display with the currently selected gear highlighted.
Switching to higher gears
When moving the selector lever forward (in Tiptronic position) upshifting occurs.
Downshifting
When moving the selector lever back (to the Tiptronic position) downshifting occurs (-).
You can switch to manual mode both while driving and while stationary.
When accelerating in stages 1, 2, 3 and 4, the gearbox will automatically switch to the next higher stage shortly after reaching the maximum engine speed.
When shifting from an upshift to a downshift, automatic downshifting is only possible when it is no longer possible to exceed the engine speed determined for the given conditions.
When the kick-down device is operating, the transmission switches to a follow-up lower stage depending on the speed and engine speed
Emergency program
In the event of a system malfunction, the automation switches to an emergency program.
In the event of a system malfunction, the automation switches to an emergency program. This is signaled by the ignition or extinction of all segments of the display panel at once.
In this case, the selector lever can be moved to all positions. However, in the provisions «D» And «S» 4th stage will turn on.
It is also possible to engage reverse gear «R». However, the electronic reverse gear lock is disabled during emergency operation.
In emergency mode, manual switching program (Tiptronic) turns off.
When switching the gearbox to emergency mode, contact the service station for diagnostics and troubleshooting.
Steering wheel
Buttons located on the steering wheel give the driver the option of manual gear shifting as well.
Steering wheel: keys (Tiptronic)
Switching to higher gears
1. Press the top side of one of the keys (+)
Downshifting
1. Press the underside of one of the keys (-)
The gear shift keys are in working mode when the selector lever is in position «D», «S» or to the position of the manual switching program (Tiptronic). When the manual shift program is activated, the buttons on the steering wheel are illuminated.
Of course, manual shifting is also possible using the selector lever on the center console.
Multitronic® V-chain variator
Models equipped with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (Multitronic® V-chain variator). Unlike a conventional automatic transmission, the gear ratio does not change in steps, but continuously. This contributes, among other things, to optimizing traction comfort and ensures optimum fuel consumption.
Choosing the right transmission ratio (switching to high and low ranges of motion) is carried out fully automatically, according to the movement programs stored in the memory, see below, «Dynamic control program (DRP)».
The gearbox is also equipped with the Tiptronic system. This system gives the driver, if desired, the ability to manually change ranges, see below.
Operating Instructions
On a vehicle with a Multitronic transmission, the engine is connected to the drive wheels, unlike a conventional automatic transmission, through a multi-plate clutch, and not through a torque converter. As a result, the vehicle is slightly less prone to spontaneous movement during short stops with the engine idling and set to «D», «S» or «R» selector lever. This must be remembered first of all on slopes / rises, if you have previously driven a car with a conventional automatic transmission with a torque converter and are not yet familiar with this feature of the variator, see. «Vehicle operating instructions with Multitronic®

Selector lever lock
The selector lever lock prevents the driving range from being switched on unintentionally and thus the vehicle to move from a standstill.
Center console: manual shift position (tiptronic)
The blocking is canceled as follows:
1. Turn on the ignition.
2. Depress the brake pedal and hold down the lock button at the same time.
Automatic selector lever lock
When the ignition is on, the selector lever is locked in position «R» And «N». To move it out of these positions, press the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, when the selector lever is in the positions «R» And «N» the following indication appears on the instrument panel display:

When the accelerator pedal is pressed sharply with the transition of the resistance point, the automation switches, depending on the speed and speed, to a lower range. Switching to the next higher range occurs immediately upon reaching the maximum engine speed corresponding to this range.
Dynamic control program (DRP)
The Multitronic® transmission is controlled electronically.
The transmission is controlled electronically. Switching to higher and lower ranges is carried out according to the movement programs stored in memory.
With a restrained driving style, the automation selects an economical shift program.
When driving in a temperamental manner with sudden acceleration and frequent speed changes, using the maximum speed or after sharply depressing the accelerator pedal (Kick-down) the transmission shifts to a sportier program range.
The choice of the optimal traffic program for specific conditions is a continuous process. However, regardless of this, it is possible to switch to a more sporty program by pressing the accelerator pedal sharply. This engages a lower transmission ratio to match the actual road speed, enabling dynamic acceleration (for example, when overtaking) without the need to sharply press the accelerator pedal all the way. When switching to a higher range and the corresponding driving mode, the operation according to the original program is restored.
When driving on mountain roads, the gear ratio is continuously adapted to the uphill characteristic. By depressing the brake pedal while driving downhill, the transmission automatically switches to a lower range. As a result, the efficiency of engine braking is improved.
If the cruise control* is on when driving on mountain roads, the transmission automatically selects a lower gear ratio to maintain the set speed. This leads, however, to an increase in engine speed.
Tiptronic mode
Manual switching program (Tiptronic) gives the driver the ability to manually engage six programmed gear ratios (ranges of motion).
Display: manual shift indication (tiptronic)
Switching to manual mode
1. Press the selector lever out of position «D» to the right. When the manual mode is activated, the display shows «6 5 4 3 2 1» highlighting the currently enabled range of motion.
Switching to higher ranges
When moving the selector lever forward (in tiptronic position) switching to higher ranges (+).
Downshifting
When moving the selector lever back (in Tiptronic position) switching to lower ranges (-).
The manual shift program enables manual engagement of six programmed gear ratios (ranges of motion). You can switch to manual mode both during parking and while driving from the position «D».
When accelerating in ranges 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, the transmission will automatically shift to the next higher range shortly before reaching maximum engine speed.
When switching from a high range to a low range, the automation will switch only after it becomes impossible to increase the engine speed.
When the speed drops (e.g. when braking) and minimum engine speed, the transmission will automatically shift to the next lower range.
Downshifting when driving downhill improves engine braking performance.
When the kick-down device is operated, the transmission shifts to the next lower range depending on the speed and engine speed.
Emergency program
In the event of a system malfunction, the automation switches to an emergency program.
In the event of a system malfunction, the automation switches to an emergency program. This is signaled by the lighting of all segments on the display panel at once.
Reverse indication
With a negative glow of the indication, you can continue driving. However, the Multitronic® system must be checked by a workshop.
Flashing indication
A flashing light indicates a serious system problem. In this case, move carefully to the service station to eliminate the malfunction.
Tiptronic steering wheel
gear ratios (ranges of motion) can be switched using the steering wheel buttons.
Steering wheel: keys
