Note: Please also refer to the materials Chapters 5.

Note: After disconnecting the battery, some of the vehicle's equipment must be initialized (remote control and automatic window lift function) and restore individual settings (for example, audio system settings), - see Gpavu "Controls and operating techniques". The engine may exhibit unusual dynamic characteristics during the first few kilometers of travel (the engine parameters are being reconfigured).

Warning: When working with batteries, certain safety precautions must be taken. Battery cans always contain highly flammable hydrogen, so do not allow open flames near the battery. Battery electrolyte is an acid solution that can cause serious injuries if it gets into your eyes or on exposed areas of the body. In addition, acid corrodes clothing and paints. When disconnecting a battery, always disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last!

1. The battery is located under the cover (1 in the illustrations at the beginning of the chapter) in a waterproof casing. To remove the cover, slide it towards the right side of the car.

2. Battery maintenance is an important procedure that requires the appropriate tools. Before starting any maintenance procedure, always turn off the engine and all electrical equipment first, then disconnect the negative battery cable.

3. The vehicles in question are equipped with a maintenance-free battery, a hydrometer (the so-called "Magic Eye" indicator) serves to indicate the charge and electrolyte level. The amount of electrolyte in the battery should be sufficient for the entire service life of the battery under moderate climatic conditions. The plugs are missing or sealed with labels, adding distilled water is not required.

4. Depending on the battery status, the "Magic Eye" indicator has a corresponding color:
  • green - battery charge is normal, no battery maintenance required;
  • black - the battery charge is insufficient, the battery should be fully charged;
  • light yellow - the electrolyte level is insufficient, the battery should be replaced.

5. The battery should only be charged with the engine off via the terminals in the engine compartment intended for connecting the auxiliary battery.

6. After charging the battery of a car that has been parked for a long time, the color of the "Magic Eye" indicator may remain black, although the voltage with an open external circuit is at least 12.7 V. The reason for this is the stratification of the electrolyte due to the long immobility of the car. Despite this, such batteries are fully charged and in good condition. To eliminate the stratification of the electrolyte, the battery must be removed, turned over once and reinstalled.

Note: To correctly determine the voltage with an open external circuit, you need to wait at least 6 hours - after this time, surface charges that could distort the measurement result are certainly eliminated.

7. If a serviceable battery is used, check the electrolyte level in each of the battery cans - it should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the battery case. If these marks are not visible, unscrew the cap of each can and look inside - the electrolyte level should reach the plastic rib. If necessary, bring the electrolyte level to the required value separately for each can by adding distilled water through the holes closed with caps.

Note: Overfilling the cells may cause electrolyte to overflow during boost charging, causing corrosion and damage to components near the battery.

8. If the positive terminal and battery cable clamp are equipped with a rubber protector, make sure it is not torn or damaged. It should completely cover the terminal.

9. The battery should be periodically inspected for damage such as cracks in the casing.

10. Check that the battery cable clamp nuts are securely tightened to ensure a good electrical connection. Check each wire along its entire length for cracks or wear to the insulation and conductive core.

11. If corrosion is found, usually as a loose white coating, disconnect the wires from the terminals, clean them with a wire brush and reconnect. The appearance of corrosion can be minimized by installing specially treated washers, or by treating the contacts with acid-free petroleum jelly or a suitable lubricant.

12. Make sure the battery fastener is securely tightened. At the same time, do not tighten the fastener too tightly - see Specifications to Chapter 5.

13. Further information on the battery and on starting the engine from an auxiliary power source can be found in Chapter 5 and in Introduction.
