Uneven premature wear
Examination
Many causes cause uneven and premature wear. Below are some of them: sub-optimal tire pressure, uneven rotation, insufficient driver skills, imperfect wheel alignment.
If the wheels are re-adjusted taking into account tire wear. the angle of convergence should be set as close to zero as specifications allow.
If wear is detected, the tires should be inspected in rotation to identify:
- Differences in front and rear tire wear.
- Uneven wear across the tread width.
- The wear of the left and right tires on the front wheels is not the same.
- The wear of the left and right tires on the rear wheels is not the same.
Re-adjustment should be performed if detected:
- The wear of the left and right tires is not the same.
- Uneven wear across the tire width of any of the front tires.
- sharp edge ("goatee") on one side of the tread.
Signs of tread wear
Check for signs of tread wear:
- The appearance of stripes 12.7 mm wide, where the depth of the tread pattern is less than 1.6 mm.
- If 2 or more grooves appear in three places, the tire must be replaced.
