Uneven premature wear
Examination
Many causes cause uneven and premature wear. Some of them are: suboptimal tire pressure, uneven rotation, poor driver skills, imperfect wheel alignment.
If the wheels are re-aligned to account for tyre wear, the toe angle should be set as close to zero as technical requirements allow.
If wear is detected, the tires should be inspected while rotating to identify:
- Differences in wear between front and rear tires.
- Uneven wear across the tread width.
- The wear of the left and right tires on the front wheels is not the same.
- The wear of the left and right tires on the rear wheels is not the same.
Re-adjustment should be performed if the following is found:
- The wear of the left and right tires is not the same.
- Uneven wear across the width of one of the front tires.
- A sharp edge ("beard") on one side of the tread.
Signs of tread wear
Check for signs of tread wear:
- The appearance of stripes 12.7 mm wide, where the tread depth is less than 1.6 mm.
- If 2 or more grooves appear in three places, the tire must be replaced.
