Hammers with flat striking parts are not recommended for straightening the front surfaces of body panels, as they leave marks in the form of nicks on the metal. Wooden hammers (mallets) are used to straighten parts with large deformations. Shaped plates and hand anvils are used as supports.

On small deformed areas (especially in the presence of bulges where the metal fibers are stretched) straightening is performed with a special hammer that has a notch on the working part.
Light hammers, smoothing hammers, are used to remove small dents and nicks, when finishing the front surface for painting or when it is necessary to restore the surface while preserving the paint coating. Hammers with plastic or rubber inserts are used for final (fine) straightening of painted surfaces.
Shaped plates, mandrels and anvils are designed to support thin sheet metal body panels during the process of restoring deformed areas.

The working surfaces of these tools should always be well polished. When removing small dents or bulges without damaging the paint layer, the surfaces of some tools are brought to perfect cleanliness and chromed.
