Removal and installation the camshaft

3. On models with independent/additional heating, remove the screw (1 in illustration 5.4) its exhaust pipe on a sound-insulating casing.

4. Unscrew the fasteners (1 and 2 in Illustration 5.5) and remove the front soundproofing screen. Remove the front bumper trim (see Chapter 11) and set the radiator frame to the service position (by analogy with Section 6).

5. Remove the timing belt (see Section 42), unscrew the camshaft gear mounting bolts and remove the gear.

6. Hold the camshaft from turning with tool No. T10051 and loosen the bolt (1 in the illustration) hub mounts and then unscrew it two turns.

44.6. Unscrewing the hub mounting bolt

44.6. Unscrewing the hub mounting bolt

7. Install puller No. T10052. Align it with the hub and screw in the bolts (1 in the illustration) into the hub. Tighten the central bolt (2) evenly to separate the hub from the camshaft cone. Remove the hub from the shaft, securing the puller with a 30 mm wrench.

44.7. Removing the hub

44.7. Removing the hub

8. Disconnect the PCV hose from the pressure regulating valve, unscrew the cylinder head cover mounting bolts in the sequence from (13 in the illustration) to (1) and remove the cover.

44.8. Sequence of tightening the cylinder head cover bolts

44.8. Sequence of tightening the cylinder head cover bolts

9. Mark the rocker arm axles with a waterproof marker to avoid mixing them up later. On both axles, first loosen the outer bolts (1 in the illustration), and then the inner ones (2). Remove the rocker shafts and the dual pump without disconnecting the fuel hoses.

44.9. Removing the rocker arm axles

44.9. Removing the rocker arm axles

10. Remove bearing caps 1, 3 and 5, then remove bearing caps 2 and 4 by unscrewing the fasteners in a crosswise order. Remove the camshaft.

Note: Position all removed components so that they can be reinstalled in their original locations.

11. Fix the timing belt using stopper No. T10100 (lower part of the accompanying illustration). Make sure that the marks on the crankshaft gear and the stopper (arrows) are opposite each other. The stopper journal should enter the hole in the sealing flange.

44.11. Timing belt fixation

44.11. Timing belt fixation

12. Lubricate the working surfaces of the camshaft with clean engine oil and set it to the TDC position (see illustration), i.e. so that the cams for the valves of cylinder No.1 are facing upwards (arrows).

44.12. Position of cams corresponding to TDC

44.12. Position of cams corresponding to TDC

13. Install the bearing caps and tighten the cap mounting bolts 2 and 4. Apply an even, thin layer of sealant to the specified surfaces (1 in the illustration) covers #1 and #5. Make sure that the sealant does not get into the grooves (arrows) or onto other surfaces. Install and tighten the fasteners of covers 1, 3 and 5.

44.13. Places of sealant application

44.13. Places of sealant application

Note: Bearing cover #5 must be flush with the outer edge of the cylinder head, otherwise the twin pump may become unsealed.

14. Install the camshaft oil seal and ensure that all ball head bolts (for fastening rocker arm axles) and the sealing rings are inserted into the unit injectors. Install the rocker arm axles in accordance with the marks made during removal. Tighten the outer bolts first, then the inner ones.

15. Place the hub on the camshaft and tighten its mounting bolt.

16. Slide the camshaft sprocket onto the hub so that the toothed segment (1 in the illustration) sprockets were at the top. Screw in the bolts (1) by hand and secure the hub with pin No.3359.

44.16. Installation position of the gear wheel

44.16. Installation position of the gear wheel

17. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of dismantling the components.
