Gasoline engines
Adjustment of the toothed belt tension can only be carried out when the engine is cold. In workshops, the adjustment of the tension of the toothed belt is carried out by tightening the tension roller. To do this, use the Matra V 159 wrench.
1. Remove the toothed belt guard.
Four-cylinder engines
2. Loosen the clamping bolt of the toothed belt tensioner.
3. In order to tighten the toothed belt, the tension roller should be rotated counterclockwise with a wrench. Tighten the clamping bolt of the tension roller with a torque of 20 Nm.
When performing this operation without using a wrench, proceed as follows:
4. Insert a sturdy screwdriver into one of the holes in the camshaft gear and turn the gear slightly to the left to loosen the toothed belt tension.
5. Loosen the clamping bolt of the toothed belt tensioner.
6. Insert a small screwdriver into the slot of the eccentric screw and turn the screw in the direction shown by the arrow in the illustration until the toothed belt tension is within the desired values. When performing this operation, the camshaft gear must be kept from turning.
7. Tighten the clamping bolt of the tension roller. Check the tension of the toothed belt again.
Five-cylinder engine
8. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolts.
9. Turn the tensioner hexagon clockwise with a torque wrench of 25 Nm to tension the toothed belt (see illustration).
10. Tighten the tensioner mounting bolts while holding the tensioner in this position with a torque of 10 Nm.
Six-cylinder engine
11. Remove the ribbed belt, as well as the ribbed belt tensioner.
12. Loosen the clamping bolt of the tension roller with an 8 mm socket wrench (see illustration).
13. Turn the tension roller with an 8 mm Allen key to the right until the tension of the gear pet. I will not reach the norm.
14. Tighten the tensioning roller clamping bolt with a torque of 45 Nm with a second socket wrench, while holding the tensioning roller in this position.
Diesel engines
To adjust the toothed belt tension in workshops, a wrench, such as the Matra V 159, is used to turn the adjusting eccentric. This wrench is commercially available.
15. Remove the top part of a protective casing of a gear belt.
TD engines
16. Measure a tension of a gear belt.
17. Loosen the tension roller clamp nut.
18. Insert a wrench into the holes of the idler eccentric.
19. Tension the toothed belt by turning the eccentric.
20. Tighten the tension roller clamp nut.
21. Measure the toothed belt tension. To do this, press on the belt with your hand at the installation site of the control and measuring device so that the deflection of the belt is at the measurement site.
TDI engines
22. Loosen the tension roller clamp nut.
23. Insert a wrench into the holes of the idler eccentric.
24. Turn the eccentric with a wrench to the right until the notch and shoulder on the tension roller are opposite each other (see illustration 11.9).
25. Tighten the tension roller clamp nut.
26. Check the setting of the gas distribution mechanism and the start of the supply of the injection pump. This requirement applies to both engine types.
