Removing and installing the camshaft on 4- and 5-cylinder engines is not particularly difficult. As for the six-cylinder engine, special tools will be needed to install the timing belt at the final stage.
Removal
1. Remove the upper part of the timing belt guard.
2. Set the crankshaft to TDC of the piston of cylinder No.1.
3. Remove the toothed belt pinion. When unscrewing the pinion mounting bolt, hold it from turning, for example, using a counterstop (3036). For six-cylinder engines, remove the toothed belt pinion using a puller.
4. Remove the cylinder head.
5. Loosen the timing belt tension and remove it from the camshaft gear.
6. Disconnect the brake booster pump attached to the cylinder head (five-cylinder engines only).
7. Disconnect the Hall sensor on the left cylinder head of the six-cylinder engine.
8. 4- and 5-cylinder engines. First remove bearing caps 1 and 3 (if you look from the front), then covers 2 and 4, working in a criss-cross pattern.
9. 6-cylinder engine. First remove bearing caps 2 and 3 (if you look from the front), and then 1 and 4, also acting in a crosswise order.
Installation
Install the camshaft as follows:
10. 4- and 5-cylinder engines. Install the camshaft in place so that the piston cams of cylinder No.1 are facing evenly upward.
11. 6-cylinder engine. Install the camshaft so that the larger diameter hole in the lock plate faces the opposite cylinder head. When reinstalling the drive shaft bearing caps, remember that on all engines the hole in the caps is not centered.
12. Install the camshaft bearing caps in place, following the corresponding markings.
13. 4- and 5 - cylinder engines. First tighten the bolts of covers 2 and 4 in a crosswise order, then tighten the bolts of covers 1 and 3. Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
14. 6 - cylinder engines. First tighten the bolts of covers 1 and 4 in a crosswise order, then tighten the bolts of covers 2 and 3. Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
15. 4- and 5-cylinder engines. Camshaft gear (if it was filmed) tighten to 65 Nm. When installing the gear in place, make sure that the wedge on the shaft enters the hole in the gear.
16. 6-cylinder engine. Install the camshaft gear together with the lock plate and tighten to 70 Nm.
17. All engines. Be sure to check the timing adjustment.
18. Do not start the engine earlier than 30 minutes after installing the camshaft. This time is necessary for the hydraulic tappets to settle.
