Note: If the engine is in the car, please do the following first:
- (a) Disconnect the negative battery cable
- (b) Drain the liquid from the cooling system (Section 2)
- (c) Remove intake and exhaust manifolds (Section 3)
- (d) Remove the distributor, high voltage wires and spark plugs (Section 4)
- (e) Disconnect the drive belts from the crankshaft pulley
- (f) Disconnect all related electrical wiring, cables and hoses
- (g) Remove the top fan shroud
- (h) Where used, remove the power steering pump leaving the hoses connected (Section 10)
- (i) Where used, remove the air conditioning compressor leaving the coolant pipes connected (Section 11)
1. Remove the camshaft (s) and hydraulic tappets as described in Chapter 35.
2. Remove the water pump as described in Section 2.
3. Unscrew and remove the back cover of the toothed drive belt, remove the gaskets.
4. Turn off bolts of fastening of a head of the block of cylinders on one turn, in an order, the return shown on pic 1.18 or 1.19 (depending on engine type).
5. Remove the cylinder head bolts together with washers
6. Lift the cylinder head out of the block (photo). If it is stuck, hit lightly with a wooden mallet. Do not insert the lever into the gasket connection.
7. Remove the head gasket from the cylinder block.
