Note: If the engine is in the vehicle, first do the following:
- (a) Disconnect the negative battery cable
- (b) Drain the cooling system (Section 2)
- (c) Remove the intake and exhaust manifolds (Section 3)
- (d) Remove the distributor, high tension wires and spark plugs (Section 4)
- (e) Disconnect the drive belts from the crankshaft pulley
- (f) Disconnect all related electrical wiring, cables and hoses
- (g) Remove the upper fan shroud
- (h) Where used, remove the power steering pump leaving the hoses connected (Section 10)
- (i) Where used, remove the air conditioning compressor leaving the coolant pipes connected (Section 11)

1. Remove the camshaft and hydraulic lifters as described in Chapter 35.
2. Remove the water pump as described in Section 2.
3. Unscrew and remove the rear cover of the toothed belt drive, remove the gaskets.
4. Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts one turn at a time, in the reverse order to that shown in fig. 1.18 or 1.19 (depending on the engine type).
5. Remove the cylinder head mounting bolts together with the washers
6. Lift the cylinder head out of the block (photo). If it is stuck, tap it lightly with a wooden mallet. Do not insert a lever into the gasket joint.

7. Remove the head gasket from the cylinder block.
