1. Follow the procedures given in Part A, Chapter 13, but note the following.
2. On a 10 valve engine, intake valves are 2-4-5-7-9, exhaust valves are 1-3-6-8-10, numbered from the timing belt.
3. On a 10-valve engine, the minimum distance from the end of the valve stems to the top surface of the cylinder head is the same as for a 4-cylinder engine. On a 20 valve engine, the minimum distance is 36.0 mm for intake valves and 36.3 mm for exhaust valves.
4. The exhaust valves on a 20 valve engine are filled with sodium, and the following safety precautions must be taken in case of repair.
5. Use a hacksaw to cut the valves into two halves, protecting them from water.
6. Now the valves must be thrown into a container of water. Since a strong chemical reaction will occur, protective clothing and goggles are required for safety.
7. When the reaction is complete, the valves can be removed.
