1. Follow the procedures given in Part A, Chapter 13, but note the following.
2. On a 10 - valve engine, intake valves are 2 - 4-5 - 7-9, exhaust valves are 1 - 3-6 - 8-10, numbered from the timing belt.
3. On a 10 - valve engine, the minimum distance from the end of the valve stems to the top surface of the cylinder head is the same as for a 4 - cylinder engine. On a 20 - valve engine, the minimum distance is 36.0 mm for the intake valves and 36.3 mm for the exhaust valves.

4. The exhaust valves on the 20-valve engine are sodium filled and the following safety precautions must be taken in the event of repair.
5. Using a hacksaw, cut the valves into two halves, protecting them from water.
6. Now the valves need to be thrown into a container with water. Since a strong chemical reaction will occur, special clothing and glasses are required for safety.
7. When the reaction is complete, the valves can be removed.
