2. Check that the cylinder head surface is completely clean. Insert two long rods or pieces of pins into the head bolt holes at opposite ends of the block, place a gasket (photo). Lower the head onto the block, remove the guide pins and insert the bolts and washers. Do not use joint compound when installing the cylinder head.
3. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in Fig. 1.18 or 1.19 in three stages to the tightening torque specified in the Specification.
4. Position the rear timing belt cover and gaskets in front of the cylinder head and block, tighten the mounting bolt and struts.
5. Install the water pump as described in Section 2.
6. Install the camshaft and hydraulic lifters as described in Chapter 39.
