The engine is a 5-cylinder, in-line, with an overhead camshaft, traditionally installed on the front side of the car. The crankshaft has six main bearings, No. 4 main bearing shells (from the front end of the engine) have flanges or separate thrust washers for setting the side play of the crankshaft. The camshaft is driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft sprocket, the belt also drives a water pump mounted on the left side of the block. The 20-valve engine has two overhead camshafts connected at the front by a chain and sprockets. The exhaust camshaft is driven by an asterisk from a toothed belt. Asterisk on the rear of the camshaft (or intake camshaft on engines with 20 valves) leads the distributor.
Valves are controlled by the camshaft (ov) through hydraulic pushers.
The engine has a full flow lubrication system. The half-moon gear oil pump is mounted in front of the crankshaft. The oil filter is installed on the right side of the cylinder block.
