Permanent check
- To begin, apply full braking to «pedestrian speed».
- On the track on the road, you will see, even with ABS, whether the brakes work evenly.
- Carry out the same test with the parking brake.
- You need a level area to test the brakes at higher speeds.
Now brake gently at first and then abruptly to a stop, at a speed of about 50 km/h with the steering wheel released, but in a state of readiness to immediately catch it.
If the car pulls to the side, then either the brakes or the chassis are faulty. For causes, see the list of faults at the end of the chapter.
Coast down a gentle hill to see how easy the wheels go.
After a test drive, check by hand:
Is the wheel rim hotter on one side than on the other?
Causes may be a jammed disc brake caliper, wedged rear brake drums, or a damaged wheel bearing.
