Constantly checking
- First, apply full braking at "pedestrian speed".
- Even with ABS, you can see from the trace on the road whether the brakes are working evenly.
- Perform the same check with the parking brake.
- To test the brakes at higher speeds, you need a level area.
Now brake gently, then suddenly to a stop, at a speed of approximately 50 km/h, with the steering wheel released but ready to catch it immediately.
If the car pulls to one side, then either the brakes or the chassis are faulty. See the list of faults at the end of the chapter for the causes.
Coast down a gentle hill to determine how easily the wheels roll.
After the test drive, check with your hand:
Is the wheel rim hotter on one side than the other?
The causes may be a jammed disc brake caliper, jammed rear brake drums or a damaged wheel hub bearing.
