Petrol engines
2. Remove the spark plugs as described in chapter 1A.
3. Disconnect the power supply from the engine management system so that the engine can be turned over with the starter. To do this, remove the fuel pump relay from the relay box as described in the relevant section chapters 4 and disconnect the wiring from the ignition module.
Warning: To avoid damaging the catalytic converter, it is very important to disconnect the fuel system.
4. Crank the engine with the starter until the oil pressure warning light goes out. If the light does not go out after a few seconds of cranking the engine, check the oil level and the condition of the oil filter. If everything is OK, check the condition of the wiring to the oil pressure warning sensor - do not continue cranking until you are sure that oil is supplied to the engine under sufficient pressure.
5. Install the spark plugs, connect the wiring to the ignition module and install the fuel pump relay.
Diesel engines
6. Disconnect the wire from the electromagnetic shut-off valve on the high-pressure fuel pump as described in chapter 4B.
7. Crank the engine with the starter until the oil pressure warning light goes out.
8. If the light does not go out after a few seconds of cranking the engine, check the oil level and the condition of the oil filter. If everything is in order, check the condition of the wiring to the oil pressure sensor - do not continue starting until you are sure that oil is supplied to the engine under sufficient pressure.
9. Repair the solenoid valve wiring.
All models
10. Start the engine as usual, ignoring the fact that it may take longer to start because the fuel system has been opened and air has entered it.
11. If the engine starts, let it idle. Check for oil, coolant, and fuel leaks. Don't be alarmed if there is smoke from engine parts that, when warming up, evaporate the remaining oil and kerosene.
12. Once you have verified that everything is in good working order, let the engine idle until it warms up (until hot coolant starts flowing through the upper radiator hose). Turn off the engine.
13. On diesel engines, check the fuel injection timing of the high-pressure fuel pump and idle speed as described in chapter 4B.
14. After a few minutes, check the oil and coolant levels. Top up if necessary.
15. There is no need to tighten the head mounting bolt after the first start.
16. If new pistons, piston rings or crankshaft liners were installed, the engine must be run in for at least the first 1000 km. During this period, warm up the engine before driving, do not allow it to be driven "under tension" (at low revs in high gear) or "at full throttle". After running-in, it is recommended to replace the oil and oil filter.
