The automatic transmission of AUDI 80 cars is hydraulic and has electronic control. The automatic transmission is four-speed and has two programs, switched on by the corresponding switch: «E» (economy mode) And «S» (sports mode).
The basis of an automatic transmission is the so-called planetary gear sets, consisting of a gear, around which three other gears rotate. A set of two gears forms its own small two-stage transmission. Changing the gear ratio is done by holding or releasing the parts of the planetary gear, which is provided by hydraulics. The multi-stage automatic transmission is provided by the sequential inclusion of three planetary gear sets.
The transmission of engine torque to the gearbox is carried out using a fluid. The motor drives the pump impeller in the torque converter (torque converter). From the torque converter pump, automatic transmission fluid flows to the turbine wheel connected to the gearbox, setting it in motion. The pump impeller and the turbine wheel rotate at different speeds. When starting off, this difference in the number of revolutions is maximum, and with increasing speed the difference becomes minimal. However, conventional automatic transmissions tend to have a certain amount of slippage. Automatic transmissions installed on AUDI 80 vehicles have a clutch to block the torque converter, providing a rigid connection between the engine and the gearbox in 3rd and 4th gears. At the same time, this reduces fuel consumption (see illustration 3.0).
