The force we apply when pressing the clutch pedal must be transferred to the release bearing. This happens in the Audi-100 hydraulically - like in the brake system. While depressing the clutch pedal, the piston in the master cylinder (on the clutch pedal) squeezes a certain amount of fluid to the working cylinder (on the gearbox). There, the piston protrudes slightly from the cylinder and, through the clutch release lever, drives the release bearing.
