1.3. Marking of the torque converter
When starting off, the AT acts as a regular clutch, and when the car is moving, it performs the job of shifting gears.
The main components of the AT are: torque converter (torque converter), planetary gear, hydraulic and electronic control units. The hydraulic and electronic control units are the so-called "mechatronics" unit.
The torque converter corresponds to the hydraulic clutch in its functions. Its task is to implement the clutch at the moment of starting the movement and gear shifting. The torque converter is equipped with a locking clutch, which directly couples the engine to the AT (without turning the torque converter).
The AT mode selector lever is located in the center console. The display in the instrument cluster is used to visualize the AT operation. A description of the AT controls is given in Section "Controls and operating techniques". There are no mechanical connections between the switches and the AT.
The AT control system is connected to the engine control system via the CAN bus and based on the analysis of data received from various information sensors (not necessarily directly related to the functioning of the AT itself), selects the optimal operating mode of the automatic transmission in terms of economy, smoothness of switching, etc.
The only AT maintenance procedure that must be performed on a regular basis is checking the level of its working fluid (ATF) - see Section 4 of Chapter 1.
This chapter provides only general information on the operation and design of the AT. Repairs to the AT that involve disassembling it should be left to specialists.
