Warning: Long-term skin contact with used engine oil is quite hazardous to health. Use barrier cream or wear rubber gloves when performing the procedures described below.
Note: Frequent engine oil changes are the most important preventative maintenance procedure available to the amateur mechanic. Over time, oil is susceptible to dilution and contamination, which leads to premature engine wear.
Note: The location of the oil filter and drain plug is shown in the illustrations in the relevant sections Chapters 2.
Petrol engines: 4-cylinder MPI and V6 3.0 MPI
1. Warm up the engine to operating temperature. For better access, remove the lower engine compartment protective cover.
2. Unscrew the oil filter (see illustration). For this you can use a special key.
6.2. Oil filter for gasoline engines (4-cylinder MPI and V6 3.0 MPI)
3. Unscrew the drain plug in the engine oil pan and let the oil drain into a previously prepared container.
4. Clean the engine oil filter mating surface, lightly lubricate the filter O-ring with engine oil and tighten the filter.
5. Tighten the drain plug with a new sealing ring to 30 Nm.
6. Fill with engine oil (see Section 4), start the engine and let it idle until the engine oil pressure light goes out. Stop the engine, wait about 5 minutes and check the engine oil level. Correct the oil level if necessary (see Section 4). Test drive the car and check the drain plug and oil filter for leaks. If necessary, tighten them slightly. Check the oil level again, adjust it if necessary.
Petrol engines 2.0 TFSI
7. Warm up the engine to operating temperature. For better access, remove the lower engine compartment protective cover.
8. Unscrew the protective plug (1 in the illustration) the oil filter drain valve and drain the oil from the oil filter housing by pressing the valve. After releasing the valve, make sure that it is flush with the threaded hole of the protective plug. Screw in the protective plug
6.8. Oil filter installation details for 2.0 TFSI models
9. Unscrew the drain plug in the engine oil pan and let the oil drain into a previously prepared container.
10. Unscrew the lid (2 in illustration 6.8) oil filter with a 36 mm head, replace the filter element (4) and seal (3). The protrusion on the seal should be facing the engine, and the seal itself should be lightly lubricated with engine oil.
11. Follow the steps described in paragraphs 5-6.
Diesel engines
12. Warm up the engine to operating temperature. To provide better access, remove the lower protective cover of the engine compartment.
13. Unscrew the lid (1 in the illustration) oil filter and remove the filter element (3) from it. If there is any oil residue in the oil filter housing, remove it with a rag. Install a new filter element and sealing ring (2).
6.13. Details of installation of oil filter of diesel models
14. Unscrew the drain plug in the engine oil pan and let the oil drain into a previously prepared container.
15. Follow the steps described in paragraphs 5-6.
Note: Fastener tightening torques are specified in the Specifications.
Petrol engines V6 3.2 l and V8 4.2 l
Note: On 4.2 L engines, oil and filter replacement is performed in the same way as for the 3.2 L engine. Below is a description using the 3.2 L engine as an example.
16. Warm up the engine to operating temperature. To provide better access, remove the lower protective cover of the engine compartment.
17. Remove the expansion tank mounting screws (1 in the illustration) and put it aside.
6.17. Location of oil filter (2) for V6 3.2 l and V8 4.2 l petrol engine
18. Unscrew the lid (1 in the illustration) oil filter and remove the filter element from it. Replace the sealing ring (B) in the cover and the lower sealing ring (2) of the filter element - it should be located with the protrusion (A) towards the engine.
6.18. Oil filter cover seals
19. Replace the sealing ring (2 in the illustration) oil filter housing (1) and filter element. Tighten the filter cover.
6.19. Oil filter housing seal
20. Unscrew the drain plug in the engine oil pan and let the oil drain into a previously prepared container.
21. Follow the steps described in paragraphs 5-6.
Note: Fastener tightening torques are specified in Specifications.
