This is due to the high voltage when the spark jumps, which is accompanied by chipping off small metal particles from the electrodes. In this case, the spark gap increases, and this requires a higher ignition voltage. If the gap becomes too large, misfiring occurs and the engine may stop starting.
To measure the distance between the side 1 and middle 2 electrodes, you will need a gap gauge. This distance must be 1.0 mm with a tolerance of±0.1 mm. In multi-electrode spark plugs, which are being used more and more, correction of the gap between the electrodes is not possible. These candles are very stable, but if the measured value is out of tolerance, then the candles need to be replaced.
New concept for new engines: air-spark spark plugs are being replaced by surface-air spark plugs.
