The photo shows the poly V-belt tensioner for alternator, servo pump and viscous fan:
- 1 - protrusion for installing an open-end wrench;
- 2 and 3 - holes for fixing the tensioner in the unloaded state.
When the holes match, the corresponding pin is inserted into them.
Fixation of the poly V-belt tensioner for alternator, servo pump and viscous fan: spring-loaded swing arm (2) leans to the right with an open-end wrench (in the direction of the arrow) until the pin can be inserted (1) into both matching holes.
To tighten the V-ribbed belt of the air conditioner compressor, you need to loosen the fixing bolts (1 and 3) on the tension roller console (4). Then install the torque wrench (2) on the hexagon of the idler roller console and tighten 25 Nm in the direction of the arrow. Wrap fixing bolts.
Audi no longer provides this maintenance item, but we still believe that a preventive check is useful anyway:
- To check the belt, rotate the engine completely several times.
- Only in this way can you really inspect all surfaces of the belts. Often, belts have only one single crack, which, when checked, may turn out to lie exactly on the belt pulley.
- Replace torn or frayed belts immediately.
Checking the tension of the V-belt and V-ribbed belt
The topic of V-belt tensioning in Audi is pretty much outdated because:
1. The automatic tensioner on the large V-ribbed belt in four- and six-cylinder engines keeps it at the correct tension at all times, so the best you can do is test the belt tensioner for proper operation.
2. With a strong finger pressure on the tensioned belt, it should bend, resisting, and the tension roller should turn to the side. When the belt is released, the roller folds back and tightens the belt. If the belt hangs freely between the belt pulleys, then the tensioner is defective (or forgot to remove the locking pin from the tensioner).
3. The water pump V-belt in the four-cylinder engine is set to a rigid setting that cannot be varied. If the belt is loosely tensioned and, as a result, the slippage of the belt on the belt pulley is too great, the V-belt must be replaced.
4. Ideal tension: With strong thumb pressure, the belt between the two belt pulleys should flex about 5 mm.
5. The short V-ribbed belt, which drives the air conditioning compressor for a four-cylinder engine, is adjusted at the first installation and maintains this tension throughout its entire service life.
