Front wheel drive cars

Before you start replacing the shock absorber, check what type of shock absorber is installed on the car. You can find out from the plate installed in the spare wheel well. There are three types of shock absorbers with the following markings:
  • 1BA - shock absorbers installed on serial models;
  • 1BE — shock absorbers installed on cars with a sports base;
  • 1BB - shock absorbers installed on vehicles intended for use on poor quality roads.

Removal

1. Remove the shock absorber strut (see illustrations 9.1 and 9.1a).

1. Remove the shock absorber strut (see illustrations 9.1 and 9.1a).

2. Place the clamps on the coil spring and compress it slightly. To prevent the clamps from slipping, wrap the corresponding turns with tape.

3. Remove the rubber stop at the top end of the shock absorber strut.

4. Loosen the self-locking nut on the upper end of the shock absorber strut. Hold the shock absorber rod from turning with a socket wrench.

Remove the shock absorber.

Installation

When installing the shock absorber, the following must be taken into account:

The lower end of the left rear strut coil spring should point backwards, and the right one should point forwards. The color marking on the spring should point downwards, toward the mounting cup. The lower hole in the shock absorber for the mounting bolt should be perpendicular to the direction of travel.

The shock absorber of the rear suspension of quattro cars is removed in the same way as in front-wheel drive cars. The problem is installing the shock absorber in place. The angle of the shock absorber installation at the bottom relative to its mount at the top must be maintained very precisely. This angle is 21±2°. It is almost impossible to perform such installation without the VAG 1752 installation template. We recommend that you dismantle the shock absorber yourself and entrust the installation to a workshop.
