Front wheel drive vehicles
Before starting work on replacing the shock absorber, check what type of shock absorber is installed on the car. This can be found on the plate in the spare wheel well. There are three types of shock absorbers with the following markings:
- 1VA - shock absorbers installed on serial models;
- 1BE - shock absorbers installed on cars with a sports base;
- 1BB - shock absorbers installed on vehicles designed for use on poor-quality roads.
Withdrawal
1. Remove the suspension strut (see illustrations 9.1 and 9.1a).
2. Install the clamps on the coil spring and compress it slightly. To prevent the clamps from slipping, wrap the corresponding turns with tape.
3. Remove the rubber stop at the top end of the shock absorber.
4. Remove the self-locking nut at the top end of the shock absorber. Hold the shock absorber rod from turning with a socket wrench.
Pull out the shock absorber.
Installation
When installing a shock absorber, consider the following:
The lower end of the coil spring of the left rear strut should be facing back, and the right end should be facing forward. The color marking on the spring must face down towards the mounting cup. The lower hole in the shock absorber for the mounting bolt must be perpendicular to the direction of travel.
The rear shock absorber on quattro vehicles is removed in the same way as on front wheel drive vehicles. It is problematic to install the shock absorber in place. The angle of the shock absorber at the bottom relative to its attachment at the top must be maintained very accurately. This angle is 21±2°. It is almost impossible to perform such an installation without the VAG 1752 installation template. We recommend that you dismantle the shock absorber yourself and entrust the installation to a workshop.
