If the fluid level in the expansion tank of the hydraulic booster drops, the system must be checked immediately. Otherwise, a sudden failure of the servo control cannot be ruled out.
1. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock in one and the other direction. Thus, the system will be pressurized and the leak will be easier to determine.
2. Leave the steering wheel turned all the way to one side and inspect the following parts, the likelihood of depressurization of which is greatest.
3. Check the rotating spool valve located at the steering column junction with the steering gear. If there is a leak in this place, hydraulic fluid seeps into the passenger compartment along the front wall under the parting panel.
4. Inspect the gear rack seal. To do this, release the clamp securing the protective cuff (cover) and move the cuff to the side.
5. Inspect the power steering pump. To do this, the pump must be washed (see illustration).
6. Check all connecting joints and, if necessary, tighten the nuts or clamps.
Steering - backlash adjustment
The steering play formed during the operation of the vehicle can be eliminated, provided that the wear of the gear rack is negligible.
7. Install the steering wheel so that the wheels are straight.
8. Have an assistant turn the steering wheel. In this case, clicking sounds should be heard.
9. Turn the steering adjustment screw to the right until these sounds disappear. Screw in the adjusting screw carefully and slowly (see arrow in illustration).
10. Carry out a test drive. The operation of the steering mechanism should not be hindered in any of the positions of the steering wheel. Otherwise the steering mechanism replace.
Power steering - fluid level check
11. Start the engine and leave it to idle.
12. Align the wheels.
The liquid level in the transparent expansion tank must be between both marks on the tank. These reservoir marks are not available for all AUDI models. In such cases, use a liquid level indicator (probe).
13. Remove the tank cap to which the dipstick is attached. Be careful, the lid is spring-loaded.
14. Wipe the dipstick shaft with a clean cloth and reinsert the dipstick until the cover is in place. Do not screw on the lid.
15. Remove the dipstick again and check the fluid level in the reservoir. It should be between both marks on the dipstick (see illustration 13.13).
A drop in fluid level indicates a fluid leak from the system. Therefore, before adding fluid to the reservoir, inspect the power steering, identify and eliminate the leak
Power Steering - Fluid Filling and Bleeding
It is necessary to fill the hydraulic booster with fluid and bleed it when replacing its parts, which requires draining the fluid.
16. Wash the filter of a broad tank of the hydraulic booster with flushing gasoline.
17. Fill the reservoir with new hydraulic fluid up to the MAX mark. Do not reuse old hydraulic fluid.
18. Install the car on the goats and, without starting the engine, turn the steering wheel several times sharply from lock to lock.
19. Add hydraulic fluid to the reservoir up to the MAX mark.
20. Start the engine and observe the fluid level in the expansion tank. If the level has dropped, align the wheels and add fluid to the reservoir until the level drop stops. In addition, when the steering wheel is turned, no air bubbles should form in the reservoir.
21. Check the fluid level in the reservoir by doing a short test drive.
