Front wheel drive vehicles
1. Jack up the rear of the vehicle.
2. Remove the hub nut cap with a chisel. In this case, move the chisel several times around the circumference of the cap. Cap deformation is not allowed.
3. Remove cotter pin and slotted lock washer (see illustration).

4. Press the adjusting wedge up to release the brake drum.
5. Tighten the hub hex nut. Perform this operation very carefully. Turn the wheel while doing this so as not to jam the bearing.
6. Loosen the hub nut. The play of the hub bearing is considered to be set correctly if the thrust washer under the nut can be displaced by pressing on it with a screwdriver. However, do not rest the screwdriver on the protrusion of the brake drum (see illustration). If the adjustable cotter pin does not fit into the hole on the lock washer after adjusting the play, the nut can be slightly tightened.
7. Replace the protective cap of the hub nut by tapping it with a rubber mallet. It is recommended to put a rag on it to avoid damage to the cap.
On quattro models, the wheel bearings are pressed in and do not need to be adjusted. It is also impossible to replace them on your own.
