Front wheel drive vehicles
Signs of damaged bearings are as follows: noise on tight turns; heavy wheel travel with the brake released. Wheel bearings can only be installed using a special tool. The bearing is destroyed by removal, so it must be replaced.
Withdrawal
1. Remove a support and a brake disk of a back wheel, address to a subsection Removal and installation of a brake disk/caliper.
2. Loosen the hex nut securing the wheel to the hub.
Warning: Place the socket wrench lever horizontally to the left so that the vehicle does not slip sideways off the stands when the nut is loosened. Danger of accident!
3. Remove the bearing/hub assembly from the trunnion with a puller (A).
4. Remove the remaining bearing race from the hub with a conventional puller with a collar (A).
Warning: Be careful not to damage the ABS sensor.
Installation
1. The wheel bearing/hub assembly is only replaceable as a set. For installation, a special tool AUDI-3429 is used. As a result of screwing the tool onto the trunnion, the wheel bearing/hub assembly is pressed on. Remove the tool again.
2. Screw on a new dodecagonal nut and thus tighten the hub until it stops. Tighten the nut to a torque of 175 Nm.
Caution: Set the socket wrench lever horizontally to the right so that when tightening the nut, there will be no teat
3. Install the caliper and brake disc, refer to subsection Removal and installation of a brake disk/caliper.
